Square Meal Review of The Brill ?

Widely commended for smartening up Caledonian Road & bringing decent, affordable British cooking to the area, The Brill remains a good-looking addition to the King’s Cross scene with its plain yet handsome surrounds. Despite the odd gripe about ‘uninspired’ cooking, locals are generally most forgiving about the place – especially when it comes to hearty portions & fair value (£17.95/£19.95 for two/three courses). On a typical day, you might be offered prawn & crayfish cocktail dressed in Marie Rose sauce, ahead of meat & fish from the grill, penne bolognese or pan-seared chicken with roast potatoes & sage jus. Nursery puds finish things off nicely: perhaps apple pie with custard, chocolate brownie or a slice of lemon tart. A refurbished cellar bar does the business for those requiring liquid sustenance.

Was not very impressed – although premises were nicely fitted out. Waitress did not know what the soup of the day was. I ordered the pie of the day – what arrived was burnt – and frankly I've had much nicer pukka pies from a fish & chip shop for a lot less than £10. Lemon tart for desert was OK. Prices were high and didn't seem good value for money. Mandatory 12.5% service charge.

We had a really good time here one Friday afternoon a week or so ago. The staff were great, looking after you without getting in the way. The atmosphere is really relaxed and unpretensious, just friendly really. The house wine (we tried both the red and white) was far better than what I would normally expect for a house wine. Most of all, though, it's really good value, no-nonsence, tasty food, and that's what I want.
