Square Meal Review of The Cadogan Arms ?

One of Tom & Ed Martin’s string of gastropubs, The Cadogan Arms has all the trademark assets – good looks, a something-for-everyone approach & a willingness to go that extra mile in the kitchen. Favourite combos such as queenie scallops with Clonakilty black pudding & apple purée are testament to careful sourcing, tagliatelle with wild mushrooms, tarragon & chestnuts brings robust seasonal flavours to the table, & more rousing dishes such as soused red mullet with lamb’s brains & fennel hook intrepid gastronomes. The dining room mixes hunting-lodge chic with touches of humour (check out the menagerie of animal heads on the walls), & amicable service carries through to the bar area, where drinkers can snack on a pint of prawns from the comfort of well-worn armchairs before moving upstairs for a game of pool.

A great place for a casual dinner with friends.

The menu is solid, top end gastropub fare which on the whole lives up to expectations. I had mussels which can be disappointing, but there wasn't a flabby anaemic one in sight which pleased me for 2 reasons: 1) they tasted great obviously! and 2) our lovely waiter who was so enthusiastic about a number of the dishes on the menu was right and could be trusted for advice on dessert. The pear tarte I had was not quite as good as my friend's chocolate brownie, but maybe that's because, being a girl, no fruit based pud will ever compete with a cocoa based one.

The service here was great from beginning to end: prompt telephone response (sadly unusual for many pubs!); a slight shifting of our table to give us more room; friendly and attentive, but not intrusive, throughout the meal.

Not sure it's one for an intimate dinner a deux as they have some big groups in and the bar is rammed, but it's a great place for a catch up with a friend. It should clean up at this end of the Kings Road where the competition can be a little overpriced, pretentious and self-conscious.

This is a brilliant pub. Whether you just fancy a drink, some food, or a game of pool upstairs. It was pretty rubbish early in the year, but whoever the new owners are have done a great job doing it up. I go in here for lunch quite a bit with my business partner, and always have great food and service. They do a delicious burger. My wife and I usually go here one night a week for dinner too. Well worth a visit. Great atmosphere.
