Square Meal Review of Burger and Lobster Farringdon ?

Touting glamour on a budget, this barnstorming mini chain from the brains behind the Goodman steakhouse group has become a ‘must-try' for London's ever-curious foodies. Each venue delivers exactly what it promises, with a chalkboard menu advertising just three items: meaty burgers served with extra cheese and bacon, juicy steamed or char-grilled lobster, and buttery lobster rolls in toasted brioche with a lick of wasabi mayo – each costing £20 (‘a bargain', with chips and salad thrown in). The best advice: go with a couple of friends, order the whole lot and share the spoils – although the burgers in particular can be underwhelming, given the price tag. Service is quick and polished, while the setting is a cool mix of wood panelling, bare brickwork and close-packed tables, with some desirable red leather banquettes thrown in. You can book, but there are always queues anyway.

  1. Burger. And. Lobster. Those three small words have developed something of a reputation since giving their name to a limited menu concept restaurant in Mayfair a couple of years ago. My dining partner and I had tried no fewer than four times to visit the two West End branches, but were thwarted each time by the “no reservations” policy, the large queue of waiting diners, and our growling stomachs. This time, stepping out of the theatre after a matinee, we decided we would not be defeated. It was time. Time to finally sample the burgers and lobsters we had heard so much about. There couldn’t possibly be a long wait for a table as early as 5.20pm, could there? Alas, as we turned into Dean Street, we could already see the huddles of people in the street, crowding, waiting for their turn to be let in. But then, in a flash of brilliance, my dining partner remembered the newer Farringdon branch. With the City a virtual ghost town at the weekend, we had found a way in. A quick ride on the number 55 bus later, and we were in. Table for 2? At 6pm on a Saturday? Absolutely, right this way...

  3. I walk past the Farringdon branch every day on my way home from work, so it was nice to finally eat there. The interior is high-ceilinged with the same stripped back style as the other restaurants. We had a good spot right by the open kitchen and got to see some cooking in action... Three of my party opted for the standard B&L order of grilled lobster with garlic-lemon butter. Unfortunately I had a pretty bad cold and my meal didn't taste of anything at all (at first I thought there had been a serious slip in standards, but my friends seemed to be enjoying theirs, and really, I don't think it would be possible to make a flavourless garlic-lemon butter...so I think my cold was definitely to blame!)...

  4. Much has been written about this novel concept already. Burger & Lobster only serve 3 dishes, Lobster, Burger and a Lobster roll all at the same price of £20. Each main dish comes with complimentary fries and salad. The lobsters at Burger & Lobster are flown in from Nova Scotia every couple of days. As a result really fresh tasting lobsters are available at very decent cost (by London standards)...
