Behind the elegant Georgian frontage of this Barnsbury gastropub lies a bar packed with well-heeled 30- & 40somethings, who fill the high-ceilinged space with contented chatter. There have been complaints of bland food & tough meat, & staff could be more helpful at times – but the seasonal, daily changing menu, coupled with a blackboard of more down-to-earth bar specials, offers much to tempt. The cooking is adventurous with a British flavour, so an early-summer bowl of chilled pea & lovage soup might be followed by offal-stuffed lamb’s breast, fennel & aïoli. Desserts such as buttermilk pudding with strawberries & shortbread continue the theme. Most of the list of Old World wines is available by the glass, bottle or 500ml carafe, & there’s also a pleasingly wide choice of beers, from punchy Leffe to mellow Harveys Sussex Best on tap.
