A slick vision of red, black & bling, Alfie’s is an apt name for a restaurant that seemingly takes its cheeky style from the Michael Caine film of the same name. Guests can enjoy the best of British, with beer-battered fish & chips topping the hit list, & cheese plates featuring prime specimens from Neal’s Yard. The sizeable menu pushes fresh fish & Cumberland sausages, but seldom gets more adventurous than beef brisket with mash & roasted beetroot – although it’s easy to find comfort in desserts such as rice pudding with caramelised apricots. The wine list is short, sweet & simply presented, but service can be less than smooth at times, with long waits between courses. The sunny terrace overlooking the square is a good bet for fair-weather relaxation & evenings of live jazz.
