‘Bob Dylan sat here 1993’ proclaims a small plaque above one of the diner-style Formica tables at the back of this Crouch End boho stalwart. The story goes that the rock poet was actually refused service, because Banners couldn’t give him his requested JD & Coke without any food. Bob obviously had no appetite at all, because the globetrotting menu offers something to suit all tastes, from ackee & saltfish or two Manx kippers for breakfast to a ’10 veg & bean burger’ or Sri Lankan lamb curry. It’s very kid-friendly, with reading material for the little ones alongside the grown-up papers in the rack, & the relaxed, chatty staff seem very at home in their hippie haven surrounded by colourful curios (everything from a Peruvian woollen hat to a racing driver’s leathers). Oh, & they make a mean vanilla malt shake.
