Square Meal Review of Daylesford Organic ?

Cross the threshold of this organic farm shop/café, & you enter a parallel universe where fresh produce is tastefully presented in twee wicker baskets, the walls are lined with a kaleidoscope of Kilner jars, & there’s enough polished white marble to keep the industry afloat. Lady Bamford’s highly successful Cotswold-based brand is perfectly at home on Westbourne Grove, where health-conscious, urban-chic ‘greens’ come to stock up on organic ingredients & posh ready-meals, or stop for a spot of lunch or a slice of cake. The monthly menu always includes assorted seasonal salads, including the perennially popular Sasso chicken Caesar, alongside freshly baked quiches, risotto & simple mains of, say, roast salmon. Breakfast is served daily, while the all-day weekend brunch is guaranteed to satisfy west London’s special brand of eco-warrior.

  1. I’ve fallen back in love with Notting Hill over the past few weekends. I’ve rarely visited this part of London, and always for the market, so I decided to move off Portabello road to the surrounding streets in hunt of brunch somewhere away from the crowds. Daylesford organic cafe and shop didn’t tick that box, but in this case we figured a crowd, and 40 minute wait for a table, was probably an indication we had stumbled onto a good thing. Whilst waiting I browsed the shop which had home wares and organic treats, a small takeaway cafe and a organic butchery. It was however a little unsettling to be seated right next to said butchery. Raw meat isn’t the best view at breakfast. The menu was fairly standard, eggs with a combination of accompaniments, organic juices etc. My companions tried a twist on eggs Benedict (£11.50) and complimented the sauce, but found the toast a little overdone and the portions a little inadequate. I tried mushrooms on toast (£8), this was supposed to come with a fried hen’s egg. I requested instead a poached egg and was told by the waiter it would then have to be a chickens egg, not a hen’s egg. Several google searches later I have yet to figure out the difference between a hen’s egg and a chicken’s egg…
