Square Meal Review of Brompton Bar & Grill ?

While BBG’s smart interior has a distinctly French feel – eclectic artwork on the walls ranges from vintage booze adverts to sketches of French dames in various states of undress – the food cherry-picks from the whole of the Mediterranean. Seasonally changing goodies such as bresaola, nectarine & mozzarella salad or tagliatelle with asparagus, broad beans & peas sit alongside fixtures including foie gras terrine & the highly popular signature fish stew, while a competitively priced weekly menu offers time-honoured favourites & a few more experimental dishes. A soundtrack of Latin jazz & French ballads is tailor-made for the debonair mix of manicured ladies in cashmere cardies, couples & gangs of Chelsea young bucks. Downstairs, a swanky snug with a dedicated bar is opened up for pre-dinner drinks – including a specialised Absinthe cocktail menu – & monthly jazz evenings.

    Simon, I have to disagree with you! I had my 30th Birthday party there this year. We were in the private area downstairs and we all had an amazing night. The food was excellent, the prices were reasonable, the staff were friendly, attentive and catered to all our needs. This is a great restaurant and I would strongly recommend it to everyone.

    Smart location, great menu and delicious food.

    What a shame that the service and atmosphere were poor. We asked our waitress various simple questions about the food on the menu and she couldn't answer any of them. We also asked for a dessert wine and no-one seemed to know what that was – it was only the front of house who did and located a bottle for us.

    We went on a Friday night at 7:30. By 9:30 it had filled up with local affluent 20 somethings (which is fine) but when they all start standing around tables having a chat and crowding the space, it all gets a bit much. The high (or low) point of the evening came when the front of house came to warn us not to use the men's toilets as someone had been sick in them.

    It's a shame, really, as the menu and food were both absolutely delicious.
