This part of the venerable Goring hotel is surprising spacious, with a cocktail bar and decadent lounge, loggia, veranda and a huge garden bigger than Centre Court at Wimbledon. Order bubbly from a silver ice bucket or relax in leather armchairs under a vaulted gold-leaf ceiling surrounded by silk-lined walls, historic portraits and low stools strangely disguised as woolly sheep. Food includes classic afternoon tea, casual sandwiches, posh ploughman’s, salads and easy-to-eat hot dishes such as glazed lobster omelette or pea-and-mint risotto. There are numerous wines by the glass, vintage Champagnes and premium spirits, plus deliciously dangerous cocktails ranging from the Goring deep sea (Hendrick’s gin, Blue Curaçao and Noilly Prat) to the house Negroni. Keep your phone or laptop switched off, please.
