Combining sound Italian food with a gallery of contemporary art & photography, Da Scalzo brings a welcome dash of class to a rundown area opposite Victoria coach station. Housed in a listed redbrick building that was once a church hall, this open-plan bar/restaurant serves early-bird breakfasts as well as a keenly priced menu of pizzas, pasta, ‘carne e pesce’. Standards such as spaghetti alla vongole & grilled calf’s liver with sage & pancetta won’t win any awards for originality, but the food is tasty & it comes with genuinely warm, friendly service. Da Scalzo’s owners founded the Patisserie Valerie chain, so you would expect some tempting sweet treats to finish – perhaps tiramisu or apple flan with mascarpone cream. Regular private viewings & talks by exhibiting artists are well worth checking out.
