Square Meal Review of Lovage Restaurant & Bar ?

‘From the minute we walked in, we were treated like VIPs’, recounts one satisfied guest, & others are eager to heap praise on the polite & attentive staff at this quiet yet lavish, old-school Indian near Shad Thames. By contrast, the food has a tendency to divide opinion. The pan-Indian menu features plenty of chicken, lamb & seafood – tandooris are always worth a punt, & readers advise keeping an eye out for house specialities such as rup chanda bhaji (a whole pan-fried pomfret served with a dry bhuna sauce), although a heavy hand with the spices can produce discomforting results. If fire is a fear, a pint of Honey Dew, Kingfisher or Cobra from the bar should make handy extinguishers.

We had our team xmas do here and it was perfect. The service was great. They were really attentive and I visited the restaurant a few days before the event to talk to them about how we'd like our seating arranged. We also pre-ordered our food which worked really well for a large group. They asked us when we'd like our meals brought out so that we could do our secret santa in the middle of courses.
The food is exceptional here. The chef does his own specials and I didn't hear a single complaint from the team. Everyone was impressed and the food disappeared and extra portions ordered.
As our event was at lunchtime, we all migrated to the bar area downstairs where they gave us an area of seats and tables so that we had our own space. We ended up staying here until midnight when they eventually closed up.
We had a fantastic team xmas lunch here and I highly recommend this place for events or private dining.

Excellent value for money, excellent food and excellent customer service! I visited Lovage for the first time on Saturday night and it was brilliant! I live in the area and didn't realise it was there but I happened across and was tempted in after viewing the outside menu and the lovely man dressed in stunning Indian clothing stood outside. From the min we walked in we were treated like VIP's, our coats were taken, we were shown to the lounge area and our drinks order was immediately taken. it was busy but the lounge area is very comfortable we almost forgot we were there for dinner and not just drinks. I cannot fault the staff in there, they are absolute pros and seem to really take pride in their jobs. As for the food – WOW!! absolutely delicious and stunningly presented! The best thing of all was the bill! for such a stunning contemporary Indian restaurant, great service and delicious food we were expecting it to be rather pricey but at just over £50 including drinks for 2 of us we were both very very impressed! To top it off we were walked to the door and sent on our way with a cheery smile and wave.

Sometimes, I find myself coming out of a restaurant thinking, now I know why I haven't been here before, wishing I'd just stuck with my instinct. Unfortunately it's worse when the restaurant in question is local.

Lovage is let down by shoddy service, waiters lacking knowledge of dishes on the menu, and that annoying profit-led attitude associated with most Indian locals. Having successfully avoided the old poppadom con and having to wait 15 minutes before successfully flagging a waiter down to order, we arrived at our starters – a further 30 mins later. No matter as the starter (aloo chat) was nicely presented and well balanced. It's a shame I hadn't kept some of the yoghurt from that dish aside to aid me with the main – a rarity for a local tandoori menu – scallops served in a Goan sauce. I was surprised by the first mouthful which blew me away. The dish was unnecessarily and overly spiced (as confirmed by my mother, who can wolf down a fal, without a hiccup but seemed to struggle after a few bits of my dish).

The annoyance was the fact that I'd enquired on the spiciness of this dish when ordering and was ensured it was a mild curry. Even with a bowl of raita, I struggled and decided to give up halfway. Unfortunately the real kick to the stomach wasn't the dish itself, it was being charged for the bowl of raita, an order I would not have made if the waiter in question had known his dishes. That and the fact that we had to send a dessert back that was rock-solid and hadn't been defrosted at all (and the second one not being that much warmer) really showed the lack of respect for customers.

Never again…If I'm after an Indian dish and don't fancy cooking one, I'll call Simply Indian.

Living quite locally I've been to this restaurant countless times and am still in the dark as to why it is so quiet. After visiting again my girlfriend insisted I write a review, hence a review.
I'm guessing the slow pace of custom is down to location but if you're down Tower Bridge / Shad Thames way it is well worth a visit.
To start with there is a genuine moustachioed Indian chap on the door to welcome you in and you don't get that at most curry houses I'd wager.
This initial welcome sets the level of service throughout the evening. Always very attentive and polite. Cannot fault the service.
The food is presented on large plates with smaller than your typical curry house portions. Personally I think this is good, less food waste and much better flavour in the dishes. You're also not left feeling as though you could roll home afterwards with how much you've eaten. The Honey Dew Beer on tap goes well as an accompaniment.
As for the menu itself, the starters are my personal favourite, a few of the mains lose their way a bit in what seems to be an attempt to pander to traditional British curry dishes – which can be a disappointment. The tandoor is always a good option and the house specialities are worth a look.

I had to look up the reviews because I had never heard of this place before. Mostly good comments, which was in contrast to it's quiet business. It's a mystery to me why this place isn't more frequented – I've visited three times, and each time the food has been of good order and good value. The service is very attentive as well. I would recommend the tandoori, and emphasise that while the menu may look ordinary, the cooking is extraordinary.

Amazing looking restaurant with fully authentic concierge to greet you dressed in Indian attire. Service is really good and the staff are very friendly.
Everything is just perfect until you get to the food. They have tried to put a slightly modern spin on classical Indian dishes with swirls of puree/ sauces used to decorate the plates. The fundamental issue is that the food really does not taste that good.
This could be a fantastic restaurant, all they need is to recruit some decent chef's who know how to cook great Indian cuisine and this restaurant would be a massive hit.
I have been there twice now and on both occasions I have really been disappointed, it is such a shame because it could be a real winner if they got the food right. Compliments to the staff, always very friendly and really helpful…
