With sleek sapphire banquettes & a sweeping curved ceiling, the restaurant within the Kings Place arts complex looks as if it’s been dropped from outer space. The menu, however, is anything but
futuristic. Grilled Cornish mackerel is nicely teamed with horseradish & Yorkshire rhubarb, while smoked haddock might appear with a poached egg & crushed potatoes. If you’ve got a show to
catch, a bowl of seafood linguine might do the trick, otherwise check out the dedicated pre-performance menu (£13.95/£18.95 for one/two courses). Beef & lamb is carefully sourced, so it’s worth
heading over for the Sunday roast, which compares favourably to speciality cuts from the carte. Best of all, the canalside terrace is one of the capital’s most idyllic spots on a sunny day.
WINE LIST: As bustling and energetic as its location near King’s Cross station, Rotunda’s list is an awful lot of fun. Divided by grape variety, there’s a decent mix of Old and New World on
offer, & the accompanying tasting notes are excellently (and amusingly) written, & provide a great help for wine novices to choose a bottle. BEST BUY WHITE 2009 Pascal Bouchard,
Chablis, Burgundy, France, £39.50. BEST BUY RED Seifried Estate, Pinot Noir, Nelson, New Zealand, £39.
