Named after the owner’s mother, Lena is heavily styled, with snazzy mirrors, white leather sofas & Louis Ghost chairs set against Shoreditch-standard bare bricks upstairs, & a loungey bar downstairs with curvaceous purple booths & copper lamps. The look is fine, but other aspects of the place have disappointed of late, with readers rating the southern Italian food ‘average’, & service ‘the worst in London’. Spaghetti nero & a dish of mussels with garlic, chilli & oregano are fixtures on the seasonal menu; game in winter might mean venison, served as carpaccio, ragù or roast (the kitchen takes delivery of a whole beast from Borough Market & goes nose-to-tail on it). The strongly Italian wine list is largely pitched around £25, & cocktails are divided according to type: ‘seasonal’, ‘frizzante’, ‘forte fortissimo’, ‘coffee & cream’.
