Autumn 2008 saw the opening of this calm & collected restaurant – a mix of polished woods, cappuccino-coloured furniture & milky white walls in a room studded with shiny mosaic columns. The kitchen offers both resolutely traditional British dishes – think juicy roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pud & horseradish sauce at Sunday lunch – & those with a contemporary twist. Prawn cocktail is jazzed up with chunks of lobster, while sea bass (rather than haddock or cod) is deep-fried in beer batter & served with twice-cooked chips & peas. A section of the menu is dedicated to grilled meats courtesy of Smithfield Market with choose-your-own sauces, & to follow there are comfort puds such as fruit trifle & Bakewell tart with pistachio ice cream. Service runs smoothly, & the wood-panelled bar is a fine spot for pre- or post-dinner drinks.
