Square Meal Review of Amani ?

It’s rare to find high-class Indian restaurants in the outer London suburbs, but Amani offers the kind of elevated cooking you’d expect in the capital’s West End. Part of the reason is that the co-owner honed his culinary skills in the kitchens of the much-lauded Cinnamon Club – & it shows in pitch-perfect starters of lemon thyme fishcakes (made with pollock) or Blenheim lamb chops infused with fennel & garlic. There are some very fine partnerships & flourishes here (spiced squid with coco cream, for example), while notable mains have included superbly rendered tandoori halibut in ginger & garlic sauce, as well as spot-on Gressingham duck flavoured with fennel & star anise. Rice & sides are capably executed & desserts feature grown-up ice-creams such as tea & mandarin.

Remarkably good kitchen for a suburban Indian restaurant. Head chef Rajiv Kumar is talented. This is as far away from the traditional “red flock wallpaper” as it is possible to get.

The guy below has no idea – I can only assume he is a rival restaurant owner. I have been to Amani in Sanderstead many times and it has been absolutely and consistently fantastic. The food is leagues ahead of any other Indian restaurant in the area. As I live closer to the new Epsom branch, I went there instead this evening and the standard was as good as at the original. Honestly, if you want top quality Indian food outside Central London at reasonable prices, this is as good as it gets.

We went there for a meal as we had a leaflet through our door.
The staff members did not speak english, did not understand a word we said.
the drinks came out wrong, the poppadoms came with the main course, the starters took 40minutes to come out, which was too salty and full of artificial colour.
The main course was poorly presented, as the plates were dirty, and the chicken was pink.

we then ordered dessers, that were not available, and were advised that they were not in stock after twenty minutes. I said that i wanted to complaon, and was told that the manager would come shortly.
We waited til 10:30pm to speak to the owner MR Azad Miah, who was so rude, and arrogant, and bullied us into paying the bill, in a threatening behaviour.

will not be going back, and do not recommend it.
have looked on visit london website, and Amani is one of the dirtiest restaurants around, with no levels of hygiene or food safety.
    a definitate no no.

The cooking, both in terms of quality and creativity, is comparable to many of the more renowned high-end Indian establishments in the centre of town and the restaurant itself is well decorated and maintained. The staff are attentive and discreet. The location is a little out of the way but this is certainly worth a diversion if you are in the area.

A mixed grill starter contained definite highlights including delicately flavoured, tender lamb chops and mint and coriander chicken with great precision of flavour. All mains were excellent: a fresh and crisp okra side dish, rajasthani lamb with great heat and depth, and an outstanding king prawn curry that would not have been out of place at the chef's alma mater, The Cinnamon Club.
