Square Meal Selections

Square Meal Review of Trishna ?

Carefully evolved dishes & seafood specialities characterise the London outpost of this Mumbai favourite. Neutral decor may be disorienting in an Indian restaurant– the place is tricked out very simply, with polished plaster & tasteful niches – but it allows the colour of the food to shine; there’s something about the dynamics of the two dining rooms that seems to help delicious fragrances linger, too. Specialities such as a spiced version of fish, chips & peas play with convention, while readers recommend crispy squid with fennel, chilli & lime, ‘perfectly spiced’ hariyali bream with tomato kachumber, & anything involving crab. Duck seekh kebab with pineapple chutney is a regular meaty standout on the well-constructed tasting menu. Service can sometimes stretch out for longer than is desirable, but suggested wine & beer matches make light work of an extensive drinks list.

Appalling service and a lack of staff professionalism. We dined last night using SquareMeal's 25% food discount and were made to feel like second class citizens. Twice the maitre'd publicly (and embarrasingly) questioned the validity of the offer I agreed on booking. What followed was farcical: a number of the dishes on the menu were unavailable. Since our wine was hidden from us, waiters had to be repeatedly called to fill our wine glasses. Upon leaving the restaurant we noticed in a bucket half a bottle of our dessert wine remaining – the waiter conceded he'd completely forgotton it was ours. With so much better competition in the area (e.g. The Colony) this kind of amateurism is unacceptable at this price.

Following the above visit in April… we decided to pay Trishna another visit on Saturday night (Aug) since we were in the area. It was a different and much improved experience compared to the last time I was there. Service was helpful and on the right side of friendly. Food and service were outstanding. Our guests – both vegetarian – asked for a dish not on the menu (something any indian restaurant should easily manage- particularly for veggies) – they were very accommodating. The duck seekh kebabs were special. On the waiter's strong recommendation we tried the marinated roast pheasant – its not one we'd have ordinarily gone for but it was beautiful. This dish alone is one we will probably go back for. Special mention should also go to the wine list. An often neglected and frequently overpriced element of some indian restaurants. Last saturday we enjoyed their well thought out range with some interesting good value choices.

Highly recommend Trishna! Stunning food, as to be expected from such a highly calibre restaurant.
Every morsel of the taster menu was exceptional — we were struck by the artfulness and originality of the ‘taste design’. Something noteworthy to experience with each tapas-like course. The service was peerless — professional, knowledgeable, personable. Ambience/dining area was relaxed, comfortable, chic, and smart. Staff were attentive and welcoming.

Almost 2 years since I last went, the food here is still great. The squid starter is a favourite, and there's a delicious selection of other starters too. The lamb chops were perfect and the bream is a great idea. Of course the crab is a must as well as the most amazing mango rice- pudding…The waiters were very attentive, friendly and prefessional- even with the place being pretty packed on a weeknight. I shall definitely be a regular.

As someone who has only recently started to enjoy Indian cuisine but loves seafood I was really looking forward to eating at Trishna, as had read some great reviews and heard about their speciality in seafood dishes.

Was pleasantly surprised to find a lovely light atmosphere and friendly staff, when I visited on 26th May. The place was packed for a Wednesday night. But what really stood out was the amazing food! Can highly recommend the lamp chops, but you can't miss out on the bream and the crab – both so fresh and perfectly spiced.

Will be back again soon – perfect for my next work dinner with clients, or a great night out with friends!

Really looking forward to this having seen the menu and the website only to be sorely dissapointed. Tried the tasting menu and found that a lot of the dishes were overspiced with one particular spice, ie too much pepper in the Crab main, too much cinnamon in a couple of dishes. Lacked subtlety.

Service was incredibly slow with simple requests like bringing an appropriate amount on Naan Bread with Mains taking forever to be fulfilled. The King Prawn was lovely and the highlight of the taster menu but a colleague told me he'd seen it at £8 for one on the a la Carte Menu!! Will most definitely not be going back.

Not in the same league as the other upmarket Indian restaurants in London. Benares, Tamarind and Veery have nothing to worry about from this overpriced, poorly flavoured and over cooked wannabe. 3 hours to serve a tasting menu says it all really. Save your cash and go to one of the others.

This seafood Indian restaurant is a gem in Marylebone. I have been to this restaurant several times since its opening – it has never failed to impress friends and clients that I brought along. The restaurant really knows how to serve its seafood in authentic Indian style. Order the crispy squid served with chilli and lime – it is simply superb. My best friend and I really enjoyed the coriander and mint coated seabream. The lamb chops marinated with Kashmiri chilli, mustard and ginger are really succulent – it simply melts in your mouth. My boyfriend and I love the seafood biryani served with daal and yoghurt. The wine list is also very impressive. I have been to many Indian restaurants before but this is the only one that knows how to serve authentic Indian tea! The staff are very friendly and happy to serve you. The setting is stylish and contemporary, yet warm and cozy.

We visited Trishna on Monday 23rd November for a 10 year reunion.
We had the private dining room and sampled the innovative 3 courses for £25 menu, which allowed you to have 3 items from the menu + rice and bread – incredible value! It also included a glass of prosecco and a dessert (although most of us didn't have room!)

The rest of the restaurant was very busy (on a monday night!!) – so book early to avoid disappointment.

The menu had 3 sections, starters, mains and vegetarian dishes – we could pick 3 from any section – thus meaning if we wanted 3 mains, we could have done! This menu was EXCELLENT value!
I had the lamp chops (additional supplement of £1 per piece, totally worth it! I had 2)
Seafood biryani and paneer. It was so tasty – flavoursome and really different to ordinary indian food found in the UK.

This is probably because this restaurant takes it flavours from India as opposed to Bangladesh, the origins of many UK curry houses.

The private dining room was classy and elegant – grey slated tiles surrounded the beautiful rectangle table capable of holding up to 10 diners. We could see the wine cekllar and were given our own private waiter for the evening too.

Staff were friendly from start to finish. We were not rushed and our food was served in a prompt and timely manner so that we could enjoy our evening and focus on catching up over fab food.

I also heard that Frieda Pinto came to this restaurant TWICE in 5 days when she visited the UK as she loved the food so much!

Definitely recommend this restaurant to all!

My wife and I ate at Trishna's on a Saturday night. We went for the tasting menu which was phenomenal. The flavours were spectacular and the dishes just kept coming. Totally worth the money and arguably the best indian food we've had in London. Service was unintrusive but attentive and the atomosphere was sophisticated but not pretentious. We will definitely be going back and taking family and friends with us.

First the good point: the food is really very good. Ok, you might think that this is the most important thing in a restaurant and, whilst it is clearly the raison d'être of a restaurant, you go out and spend money for the whole experience. At Trishna, the real problem lies in the decor: bare wooden floors and exposed brickwork may be oh so trendy and look achingly cool, but they also lead to sound bouncing around to such a degree that it is difficult to hold a conversation (the first time we went, we were sat next to a table of twelve: conversation was impossible).

If you go, and it is worth a try, go in summer, so that you can sit outside (or bring earplugs and a pen and paper, so that you can at least write to your companion, even if you can't hear them).

Trishna is a prime example of a restaurant where too much fusion has gone completely wrong! Overall we were dissatisfied with the restaurant – the portions were tiny and the food was extremely bland. The service was also extemely slow and they put us on a table at the back of the restaurant near the bar which had no atmosphere whatsoever. My starter (whitebait with chilli sauce) was absolutely disgusting and when I didn't eat all of it, they didn't even offer to bring me another starter. The only authentic thing about the restaurant was the dessert – gulab jamun was very good but again only one small piece per plate. I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone – overall very disappointing and not good value for money.

To start with the decor was modern, it was stylish but discreet. The way the restaurant is divided into sections enhances the atmosphere and gives a sense of privacy. The food was delicious and light. I could have eaten our meal all over again. My favourite was the lamb chops, but the bream and the fried squid were also excellent. The service was friendly and efficient and the courses were brought at just the right time. We even met the owner, Jo who was charming. It is good value for money as well as you get what you pay for with high quality food, service and a great location. Overall this is the best indian restaurant I have been to (including in India) and its emphasis on seafood gives it something special.

Dining at Trishna was a memorable experience. Although it was a busy night and it was a bit noisy, we felt thoroughly taken care of, and the standard of food was exceptional. The shrimp dish and succulent lamb chops were particularly special, with the lamb leg curry being our favourite. Desserts were light and different. Next time we will try the 6 course tasting menu, with the ideal wine tasting pairing. Ingredients of this quality are well worth their price, and the excellent service ensured we will return. Many thanks.

I have been to Trishna several times since its opening (as I work locally) and have eaten pretty much all of the dishes on the menu. What I like/is good about Trishna:

    1. Food. Ingredients of absolutely best quality, cooked to perfection (most of the times) and presented in interesting ways. Seriously good food to eat, look at and smell. Miles ahead of food served in other mid to high end Indian restaurants and bears no comparison to them. Highlights for me: bream, prawns, mussels and picked crab (notice the seafood bias).

    2. Décor / Ambience. Minimal, unobtrusive and understated with a clear Nordic influence. It could very well have been an organic coffee shop in Stockholm or a breakfast place in Oslo. For me, it allows you to focus on the food and people around you – unlike an overly theatrical or “busy” restaurant that detracts from the purpose of the visit.

    3. Service. Naturally expectations of service in such a place are very high. Most of the times they get it right– i.e. staff are almost invisible but still there when you need them. There were a couple of occasions in the early days when the service was jerky and left more wanted. On escalating this with the manager they said that members of staff were off sick so the rest of the staff were more stretched than usual. But I have to say that management seem to have addressed this issue, as on my recent visits

    4. Price. I like seriously good quality food and on that basis the à la carte prices are reasonable. I would probably put it on a par with Zuma and Roka. With the toptable offer it is a steal!

Would love to get the equivalent place for Spanish food – maybe someone out there can listen and open one?

Food was average some dishes needed a bit more spice i.e. grilled prawns, bream, grilled whole chicken was overcooked and dry. Squid needed a dipping sauce to give it a bit more zing and flavour. Positives: Fish curry was very nice.
The service was appalling. Waited all night for them to refill water glasses, time in between courses was way too long (thought we needed a “break”) but in reality they could not keep up with the dining room. Even getting the bill was long and arduous! Not once were we asked if things were fine or if we required anything.
I am afraid I would not return for an encore.

We visited Trishna last night with friends and it was spectacular: the immaculate restaurant was beautifully decorated, and the staff friendly, attentive and well-informed about their menu.

The food was a perfect blend of spice and flavour, light yet substantial – a far cry from your average curry! Our runaway favourites were the wild tiger prawns and hyderabadi fish tikka, and a highlight was the lamb chop with kashmiri chilli marinade – perfectly cooked and succulent. Although already comfortably full we had to try the desserts – quirky and delicious ice creams and stunning mango kheer.

Overall Trishna is an accomplished combination of world-class food and professional service which I would highly recommend. We will be definitely coming back for more!

I have to spread the word. Trishna London is AMAZING!!!

Since they opened late last year, I have probably been going to Trishna almost every other week. I cannot get enough of it. From the moment you walk in, a warm welcoming smile, good friendly service, where NO is not in their vocabulary, and a meal worth mortgaging your home. I do not know how the chef does it, but every time, the food is exactly the way i remembered it previously. My favourite dishes have to be (Not in any order) The Lamb Chops (Oh my Gosh, probably the best Chops i have ever had – Sorry Zuma, yours are pretty great too), the Squid, the Paneer, the Lentils, the Scallops. Oh who am i kidding. there is not a dish i do not like there. The vegetarian food is excellent. I took my mother there once, and she still goes on about how she enjoyed her meal. That has to have passed the test.

They have a great deal on at the moment, and i would say, try it now, before they realise their deal is probably losing them money

Trishna must be the best thing that has happened to Indian food in London for a long time.Over the years we have been fans of the parent resturant in Mumbai and are pleased to say that this resturant lives upto its pedigree, even though the food is different.

The resturant is well appointed, staff courteous and the menu well balanced. For starters we had the very tasty Hariyali Bream, Paneer and the excellent Squid and Lamb Chops. This we followed with the Hyderabadi Dal,Saag, Potatoes and the Butter Garlic Crab, all of which were very good. However the Crab is a special treat and should be a must have for everyone who enjoys eating crab and does'nt mind a bit of cholestrol.

Desert was a trio of ice creams, beautifully presented and Kheer, both delightful and an ideal way to end the meal.

A must for anyone wanting Indian cuisine in London – the fresh Lobster and Bream were sumptious and the Seabass curry contains the perfect mix of spice and coconut flavours. The wide variety of beers on offer was also an unexpected bonus. The host was excellent and I'm definately going back there soon.

It is best to have been to a restaurant at least twice before one can form a sensible opinion about the food and service.I have been to Trishna once as a guest and then with my girl friend and must say that this is the best Indian food i have tasted.Only if all Indian restaurants can serve . such fresh homely food will Indian food become truly memorable. The squid, bream and the prawns are very uniquely prepared and ideal starters. We had the specialist garlic butter crab and the lamb curry and potatoes, spinach and aubergine to follow and all dishes were sumptuous. The wine list is well thought out and the staff efficient. This is a hot new edition to the west end eating places no wonder they are constantly packed even in miserable January

Having read mixed reviews about Trishna and now having visited it, it's clear that there is a divide amongst diners about its merits as an ‘indian’ restaurant. as I walked in and took an eyeful of the clean and crisp scandinavian inspired interior I could see this was going to be a different dining experience to my local tandoori and accepted that as a refreshing change, perhaps this is where some people are going wrong, like the group of gentlemen seated nearby, quibbling over the price of the signature lobster dish.

I actually found it quite funny having read one reviewer's comments on the food not being indian at all; at what point do clean presentation, edible portions, delicately balanced ingredients, spicy flavours and good wine not constitute an indian experience? Because to me these are the most important dimensions to a good indian meal as opposed to oily batches of pre cooked curry you get on the high st – which is not indian cooking at all let me tell you. Where Trishna fails is not in its cuisine, which is flavoursome and generous, it is it's inability to overcome diners' preconceptions of what ‘real’ indian food should be. If you understand that Trishna is not representing the whole of India and not even a region but a distinct style of cooking a particular food (in this case seafood) in a specific district of the country, you will enjoy your experience as I did.

As for comments on the vegetarian range, I myself have in the past been vegetarian and have friends who are vegetarian and we would all think it common sense not to go to a seafood restaurant for a decent vegetarian meal! Specialist restaurants are not obliged to offer vegetarian dishes and Trishna's are certainly not branded as meals but accompaniments to the mains to enhance and balance the flavours. Anyone complaining about these being afterthoughts are plainly not able to appreciate a finer cuisine.

All in all, a well thought out restaurant with a good select blend of seasonal dishes, a superbly cooked succulent seabass market curry and good helpful service. If improvements were required it would probably be a slightly bigger space (though we went on a quieter Tuesday night, I can imagine it gets busier on weekends and would hope this doesn't cause pushy table turning). Definitely one to add on the ‘go-to’ list.

A relaxed but busy restuarant and a meal to remember! The staff were attentive and informative and ensured we ordered the right quantites with a good mix of flavours. The aubergine starter was delicious. The highlight of the evening was definitely the sea bass curry served with a light but rich curry sauce. Don't miss the ginger ice cream for desert! We will definitley be returning.

Fresh produce, lovely balance of flavours, great wine list and a cool setting…those comparing Trishna London to the one in Mumbai are doing London an injustice (John J)…Mumbai is great, but London is far more refined and much more suited to the London restaurant scene…the chef here has clearly had to adapt the menu to suit the London palette, and has done a great job…the produce is of the highest quality, and he definitely does NOT load his food with MSG like his Mumbai counterparts…wild tiger prawns, hariyali bream and the lobster were all delicious…

Don't come here expecting Trishna Mumbai, Trishna London has its own identity, which i am sure will succeed…in fact if it isn't already one of the best Indian restaurants in London in week 1, then i am sure it will be by the end of the year…i will definitely be back…

Sanitised and deodorised version of the real thing. It bears no relationship to the original. Uninspiring flavours, cramped decor, flustered service, pretentious plating; but worst of all the food which is a travesty of the strength of west coast indian flavours that made Trshna famous. Sad…

delicious. Very exciting venue, interesting compinations of flavours and great drink and wine offer. As Indian as a high end restaurant in this category can be. Comparing Trishna in India with the one in London hmm, you can but then it is 1:0 for the outpost in the UK. Anyway give it a try and trust your own taste buds. I will be back.

Pleasant ambience with a buzzy atmosphere. The decoration is nice, the restaurant layout is cool and funky (split into 3 due to the shape of the building). A good pick for a fun meal where food is not the focus. I think it's important obviously to accept the restaurant for what it is, a high-end a la carte seafood restaurant with an emphasis on Indian-esque flavours – it's NOT an Indian restaurant – anyone going with that expectation (as I did) will be left disappointed and feeling ripped off. As a result, I felt the food was substandard – it was a little bland, a little not thought out and not very Indian. Portion sizes are tiny and prices high. We were a group of meat eaters and non vegetarians. Both were disappointed.

Vegetarian side dishes were an afterthought, tiny and tasteless. You may say this is predominantly a seafood restaurant, but so are J Sheekey and Scotts and they have fabulous vegetarian main dishes. In central London, it's a must to cater for both groups adequately, in my view, and most top restaurants do. Meat/Fish eaters in our group thought the food was bland too. No typical condiments like raita or salad etc. No choice of bread or rice – there's one option for each, a bread basket and rice.

Drinks and wine list was great, including Indian wines on the menu. The salted lassi is very tasty.

Service was average but a bit huffy at times. The front desk and bar staff were very friendly and courteous always.

Value for money – a meal for 3 with no alcohol came to £100 and we were charged twice for a dish so check your bill. We didn't feel like we had eaten/drunk £100 worth of food/drink.
The restaurant could improve by expanding the menu, reducing the prices or increasing the portion sizes, giving more thought to a coupe of token vegetarian dishes, using more flavour in the food.

I thought this place was fantastic! The food was excellent (crab comes highly recommended!) and service was faultless and very friendly which complemented the warm and relaxed ambience of the restaurant. Trishna is an excellent addition to Marylebone village and I have to agree with the previous post that this is likely to become one of London’s best and most popular Indian restaurants. I for one will certainly be coming back many times!

Most importantly the food was unique and excellent, which considering, as i was told, it was only day 3 of opening, was very impressive:

    • Koliwada Shrimp – perfect and sauce was great.
    • Fish tikka – perfect
    • Scallops -  excellent
    • Tiger prawns – great
    • Ice cream was cool touch and showed class

There was also a great ambience and the staff had a good attitude and were well mannered. I have been to Trishna in Mumbai, which is very good, but for me London is a big improvement, both in terms of the originality of the flavours and the quality of the fish. I am sure this will become one of London's best and most popular Indian restaurants.

We had a fantastic evening at Trishna! This restaurant has a smart but utterly relaxed atmosphere, our waitress was extremely helpful with the menu and outstanding service continued throughout the meal. All the food was delicious – I particularly loved the squid and could have eaten several bowls of the daal! Make sure you try the ice cream if you've got any room at all for dessert. Overall a great find and we will be going back again very soon!

Food here is gorgeous – the bream, fish tikka & aubergine from the grill and the mashed turnip & pea were particular favourites. Dining here though was an uncomfortable experience – we eventually decided the colour scheme was a bit A&E and the bright lights over the tables are in an awkward place & not the most flattering. Pared down design works well in a big space like Zuma but here, especially with the harsh lighting, it made dinner feel like something to hurry. A shame as the food is definitely worth a return visit.

Appalling service and a lack of staff professionalism. We dined last night using SquareMeal's 25% food discount and were made to feel like second class citizens. Twice the maitre'd publicly (and embarrasingly) questioned the validity of the offer I agreed on booking. What followed was farcical: a number of the… More

Highly recommend Trishna! Stunning food, as to be expected from such a highly calibre restaurant.
