The Hat & Tun is a big dollop of Victoriana replete with scrubbed-up spit-&-sawdust decor, a magnificent mahogany bar reaching up to the ceiling, a ludicrously oversized porter’s armchair & hapless stuffed animals on the walls. Comfort food is the name of the game when it comes to weekday lunches – an assortment of pies (steak & ale, chicken & tarragon) lead the charge, although you can also order sausage & mash with caramelised onion gravy as well as a posse of spruced-up baguettes & sandwiches. Some have complained that food prices exclude workhouse paupers, however London Pride & Adnams are on tap if you’re happy to go hungry. An open fire warms the cockles in winter, while the alfresco expanses of Hatton Wall beckon if you want to catch some rays.
