Square Meal Review of Time & Space ?

Attached to the Royal Institution, Time & Space is far more than the cafeteria attached to a scientific research lab. Scientific tombs arranged around the dining room add some intellectual clout to proceedings, & glass panels reveal glimpses of the RI itself. By contrast, giant pink lamps add modernity, although the rubber-laminated tables are hardly beau monde. The food is competently prepared, British-led stuff (witch sole with brown shrimps, Cornish pasty with apple coleslaw, crab on toast with hollandaise, custard tart with nutmeg ice cream, classic strawberry trifle) plus the odd global intruder – perhaps gazpacho, burgers or halibut with caramelised button onions & Bordeaux sauce. Staff are efficient & serve with a smile, while the all-day menu is a Mayfair bargain at £25.50 for three courses. The bar next door does a good line in affordable cocktails & afternoon tea.

The room is one of considerable charm with a progressive 21st Century decor blending admirably with the wide spaces and carved chimneypieces of the 18th. The tables are well apart, which allows for private conversation, something rare and of great value in central London. There were only two members of staff waiting on tables, but they managed to attend to our every need quickly and with aplomb. I was accompanied by one of the world's most demanding grande dames, so this was no mean feat. The restaurant is a winner both in terms of the friendliness of the staff and the elegance of the space.

The cooking is less accomplished. Competence and good value but simple additions like a bit of salt and lemon might have made all the difference. Happily, it eschews the chili-obsessed cuisine of modern Britain. It was pleasant to leave a restaurant with one's mouth lining intact.

All in all, a great place. Highly recommended.

Time & Space is an interesting arrival on the Mayfair dining scene. It has been here nearly a year but has been low profile so far. It deserves more attention, with intriguing cuisine in an elegant modern setting.
The decor consists of a period room in the heart of the Royal Institution, bravely modernised with purples and blacks. It’s good, but not as refined a makeover as some of the grand hotels nearby have gone through. However at £15 for two courses at lunch one would not expect it to be.
Service was excellent and attentive throughout; possibly helped by the low turnout on the day I dined. The food was thoroughly modern continental with many interesting combinations. I choose from the set menu and had pear and blue cheese salad to start followed by pork in a rich sauce with a perfect square of dauphinise potato. I enjoyed these, thinking they were creative and interesting dishes, but felt the blue cheese and the rich sauce almost overpowering. However, I would welcome going back to try more from this creative chef. Presentation was strong too.
With coffee they bring a great selection of petits fours and other little treats, reminding me of the sort of thing you have at the end of a Michelin starred meal. They were great
In conclusion, it’s a great value, unusual and elegant dining room in the middle of Mayfair. Well worth a try. The free museum upstairs is also worth a wander around.
