Square Meal Review of Public House ?

Public House is a true eccentric, lurking with mischievous intent just off Upper Street. Antique chairs, Chesterfields, standard lamps & assorted curios give the bar a kooky charm, but idiosyncrasy can sometimes tip over into preening pretension, & the venue has its detractors. Nevertheless, regulars (a hip bunch) love it, praising the ‘passionate & knowledgeable’ staff & ‘fantastic’ drinks. Wines have been chosen with care, & homemade lemonade & imported bottled beers are also available. But it’s what the place bills as ‘mixed beverages of a fancy, delicious or dangerous nature’ that steal the show: serious cocktails like the ankle breaker (rum, vanilla sugar, cherry liqueur & fresh lemon), ‘infamous for its ability to induce a wobble’. Food is modern European – steak tartare, sea bream – at prices that won’t offend.

I went for dinner here last week with a few of the girls from work and had a really nice evening. The place has a very original feel to it and all the staff we spoke with were really sweet. We all tried different things and were all very happy with what we ate. I had Red Gurnard with shellfish bisque which was excellent and good value at £13 but everyone else was just as happy. Really did not expect the food to be so good as it's not a proper restaurant really, but had a great evening.

Recently found this little place tucked around the corner from Upper Street and thought it was lovely. Really tasty food, informal ambiance and friendly service. Their steak tartare is phenomenal and i spent 6 years eating it in Paris so that is praise indeed! Will be back.

What a huge disappointment this venue was.
I went for a drink on Thursday evening only to be greeted by the two barmen/owners? in a very rude manner. The barman became angry when I asked for a Vodka and tonic, informing me they don’t sell Vodka “because it doesn’t bring anything to our bar”. I’d never heard such pretentiousness in all my life. Did the Beefeater Gin or Wray and Nephew Rum bring something different I wondered?
I’d finally had enough when the barman told my group “if you don’t like the size of your reserved area you can leave” ( we had asked for a table for 20, and we could seat only 10). I would think they would have welcomed our custom as the place was empty.
There were more unprofessional incidents to our evening, which I won’t bore you with. But if you do want to go to the most pretentious bar in London, be spoken to rudely, and Vodka isn’t your drink then I’d suggest going!

Not so hot this new hot spot. Was intrigued to try especially as on another well known restuarant reservation site I booked for the 50% off deal (you know the one). Bill came with a 25% off discount – and an embarassing silence. Full price or even with 50% off this is pretty pricey for the portion size. Food well enough executed and service is pleasant enough. But vintage lighting and sideboards aside, I would not recommend, unless enjoyment of 20th century antiques feeds your soul.

I stumbled upon this place by mistake and was instantly drawn in by the atmosphere which manages to be both sophisticated and relaxed. There is real character to both interior (the artwork is original and a visual feast) and the staff, who were delightful. It is always a joy to leave your order at the whim of the barman (both food and drink) and be more than satisfied. The cocktails were on a bar with anything I've had in London and the food was fit to accompany them. The only down point of the night was having to eventually stumble through the candlelight and politely bohemian crown outside and head home. A must.

I have to say had one of the best evenings here i have had for a while, didn't eat properly but had some nibbles at the bar which were really nice and the drinks were fantastic, couldn't disagree more about the bar staff, they were very knowledgeable and very keen to discuss the sort of drink I was after, ended up having a really good crack with them, not too many places in London you can do that.

Love it, love it, love it, here.

It has everything you need for a great night out, passionate and knowledgeable staff that genuinely care. Amazing food, with quality ingredients, an imaginative and thoughtful menu and at fab prices. A fun, buzzy atmosphere that is also relaxed. Winner all round. If you haven't been go immediately!

i have visited this place on a number of occasions now, and i can see where the vastly different opinions posted online arise from. Firstly, this place has a strong personality, and as with all strong personalities, some people feel uneasy for a myriad of reasons from the psychological to the practical. Secondly, i have noticed that there are some very busy weekend evenings, where the clientele are clearly out of place, displaced for the reason of a friends birthday or similar. At these instances i would say that Public House has a choice of whether to honour it's identity and integrity or simply go along with it. Perhaps the boys haven't quite figured out what the best approach is here and this leads to criticism. That aside though, the food, drink and service have always been faultless and i will be coming back as long as i live in islington. I suggest you do the same and ignore the boo boys n girls

Nicely decorated and the many punters makes for a nice fun atmosphere. The bar staff, on the other hand, let this bar down in a major way – lairy, unattentive, rude, and mostly concerned with conversing with each other than serving customers. Have been twice and has been the case on both occasions.

There are much nicer bars with professional bar staff in the area so I would avoid this one!!!

This is a new gem in Islington. My wife and I discovered it recently and it is now our favourite bar in an area with plenty of stiff competition.
There seems to be a huge amount of thought behind this place, from the free water glasses when you sit down, to the creative and eclectic modern British menu, the great music, the inventive cocktails and the friendly and fun service.
We wanted to eat everything on the menu and were not disappointed when it arrived. All the food is reasonably priced as is the wine list, which is well chosen and has plenty of glass and half bottle options. There is also a very interesting beer and cocktail list, which again shows evidence of the care and thoughtfulness that has gone into the creation of this place.
Decor is an interesting mix of retro furniture and bits and bobs. One downside is that you struggle to find large tables with probably too many low two-seaters. Nevertheless there was enough seating to go round for dinner on a Thursday night.
I heartily recommend that people make the effort to get here to sample this great addition to the Islington scene.

My place…i love it!! …Reckon anyone who appreciates my honesty in bigging up my own place on a website and doing so openly rather than pretending to be a neutral punter will appreciate the subtly different approah we adopt to furnishing our delightful guests with the best drinks in the world and damn tasy food…

Furthermore, our food menu has been reviewed and updated (as we agreed with the square meal assessment that it was not wholly jointed and would benefit from a review of its format) in such a manner that renders it much more fitting for the eating experience one may expect from a slightly unusual and box defying creation…
