Public House is a true eccentric, lurking with mischievous intent just off Upper Street. Antique chairs, Chesterfields, standard lamps & assorted curios give the bar a kooky charm, but idiosyncrasy can sometimes tip over into preening pretension, & the venue has its detractors. Nevertheless, regulars (a hip bunch) love it, praising the ‘passionate & knowledgeable’ staff & ‘fantastic’ drinks. Wines have been chosen with care, & homemade lemonade & imported bottled beers are also available. But it’s what the place bills as ‘mixed beverages of a fancy, delicious or dangerous nature’ that steal the show: serious cocktails like the ankle breaker (rum, vanilla sugar, cherry liqueur & fresh lemon), ‘infamous for its ability to induce a wobble’. Food is modern European – steak tartare, sea bream – at prices that won’t offend.
