Despite its rather out-of-kilter location in Old Spitalfields Market, Le Bouchon Breton seems to tick all the boxes as a quintessential French bistro, complete with an unfussy menu, black &
white chequered floor & dark-red leather banquettes. Unfortunately, the service is often akin to a Gallic shrug: we found it painfully slow & disorganised; others have called it ‘stressed’
& ‘terrible’. The food, however, deserves top marks: foie gras terrine, moules mariniere & confit duck are spot on, likewise steaks from north of the border & the groaning cheese
trolley (‘brimming with creamy delights’). If the garrulous Gallic atmosphere gets too much, you’re welcome to sit ‘outside’ on the covered terrace – although the sight of Spitalfields market
traders packing up for the day isn’t quite the same as sitting by the banks of the Seine.
WINE LIST: As you’d expect, Le Bouchon Breton is focused mainly on French wines, but there is also a good selection of wines from other countries, & many half bottles. If you’re feeling
decadent, the Champagne & stickies are worth a look. BEST BUY WHITE 2007 Umani Ronchi, Villa Bianchi, Verdicchio dei Castelli Jesi, Marche, Italy, £24. BEST BUY RED 2007 Prats
& Symington, Post Scriptum de Chryseia, Douro Valley, Portugal, £44.
