Plying its trade at what some might call the ‘wrong’ end of this restaurant-packed road, The Bolingbroke is a classic gastropub from a group of equally competent establishments (the company also owns The Avalon, The Stonhouse & The Abbeville). Despite the location, it attracts professional 30-somethings who avoid the never-ceasing high-octane buzz at the other end of the street. They’re rewarded with good drinks, poshed-up pub food (crab cakes & aïoli, say, then gilthead bream with ratatouille, or guinea fowl with apricot & hazelnut), as well as steaks & hamburgers – all served with a smile in a light-flooded back room or in comfortable alcoves around the bar. Drinkers use the main room, where they find tasty cask ales & a thought-through wine list. Sunday lunches are long, relaxed, family affairs.
