Square Meal review of Kazan City: ? Write your review

A Victoria stalwart with a reputation for offering ‘great food at great prices’, Kazan recently touched down in the Square Mile for a second opening. Twinkling chandeliers & luxurious silk cushions provide the finishing touches to the plush Ottoman-style interior, where dim lights & sedate music create a suitably relaxed setting. Mezze is king here, & there’s a staggering amount to choose from. Char-grilled giant king prawns marinated in lime & chilli more than lived up to their description, likewise light & fluffy filo pastries stuffed with creamy goats’ cheese, spinach & herbs. The kitchen is also well versed in the art of good hoummos & falafel, although ‘ladies thighs’ (rolls of ground lamb fried in light batter) are an interesting deviation from the norm. Smooth, obliging service is in tune with the business clientele & there’s an impressive drinks list offering imaginative cocktails & reasonably priced wines.

A small group of us were having a celebratory dinner and were really enjoying the evening, until the manager decided to ask us to "keep the noise down" because 2 gentlemen sitting in the booth next to us were having a "meeting". We weren't being unduly loud so were deeply offended and asked for the bill immediately. Surely the place to have a meeting would not be in a popular restaurant on a Friday night where it's going to be quite noisy. When approached and told how we felt, the manager was very unprofessional and just smirked the whole time, saying he was going to offer to move us to the bar area – what a cheek, no mention of offering to move the "meeting" people.

On a positive note though, the waiters were very good and the food was tasty.

But remember if you want to enjoy yourself on a Friday evening with friends, don't go to the Kazan in Houndsditch – you'll have to be very quiet and end up being disappointed.
