Some places just don't get the gastropub concept, but The Bull & Last has got it sussed. If you just want a drink and some rollicking atmosphere, it's a terrific watering hole complete with proper bar snacks (Scotch eggs, oysters), nicely shabby interiors and real ales from London breweries. If you want food with ‘loads of flavour', the upstairs dining room is the place to be. The menu offers bags of variety, from beer-battered haddock or steak and chips to superb pumpkin ravioli or char-grilled lamb rump with caramelised artichokes and girolles – plus churros with dulce de leche to finish. It's a tad pricey, but ingredients are faultless and smartly assembled – how lovely to see pea fritters on a summer menu. Service is exceptionally friendly, and there are plenty of wines by the glass, too.

love2feed :: eat: the bull and last
This is the second time I’ve made the trek to The Bull and Last on a Sunday, previously for a girls brunch and on this occasion, for a friends birthday celebration. With all sorts of accolades under its belt, such as winner of the Observer food awards “best Sunday lunch in 2011″ and runner up in 2012, there’s a reason why people continue to flock together to this highly acclaimed Highgate gastropub. Word of warning, if you don’t see eye to eye with stuffed furry animals, have an overwhelming fear of taxidermy or slight case of mortophobia or doraphobia, this pub ain’t for you matey!..

The Goody Bite :: Lunch at the Bull and Last, Highgate
We visited the Bull and Last in Highgate for a friend’s birthday lunch. It proved to be a great choice for our group, which included two-year-old twins, as it was basically full of women and children – indicative of its friendly, unstuffy approach to food service. Saying that, the food has its challenging moments – not least the breaded duck tongue that formed part of the adventurous duck platter board. The board included some winners, in the form of a smooth duck pate, and some losers like the duck prosciutto, which, I’m told, tasted like sweets?!...
