Despite becoming a big name round these parts, there’s something decidedly utilitarian about The Modern Pantry – a multi-purpose eatery/deli inhabiting a breezy Georgian townhouse overlooking St John’s Square. The informal downstairs café is a haven for media types who slouch about in its canteen-style surrounds (brunch is a popular shout), while a slightly more civilised dining room caters for the BlackBerry set upstairs. ‘Beautifully presented dishes’ feature on an ambitious, melting-pot menu that reflects chef Anna Hansen’s time at fusion trailblazer The Providores, with oriental flourishes looming large: king scallop sashimi with truffled mustard-seed dressing, wasabi tobiko & celery cress; lamb rump with sautéed wild garlic & umeboshi fondant potatoes; tamarind & miso-marinated onglet with cassava chips & smoky apricot relish, for example. Dishes are paired with suggested wines – although these aren’t always the cheapest on the list.
