Square Meal Review of Kyashii ?

‘If you like fish tanks, you’re in for a big treat’ advises one reader who was wowed by Kyashii’s flashy design flourishes, eye-catching neon & brilliant white interior. Spread over two glammed-up floors, it offers fine dining in the intimate basement rooms & a wallet-friendly menu at ground level (with a slick mezzanine bar above). Dishes are stylishly presented & perfect for sharing, whether you go for nigiri, sashimi or signature rolls with the fish wrapped outside. There are also various izakaya plates & mains, with must-haves ranging from flappingly fresh yellowtail ponzu with truffle oil & a tiny chilli kick to black cod subtly marinated in saikyo miso. Decent cocktails are an added attraction, although regular complaints about ‘scattered’, ‘rushed’ & ‘rude’ service suggest staff need to sharpen up.

I visited Kyashii last night and brought along a Groupon voucher; this all was quite simple until we sat down. We didn't realise we needed to let 4 members of staff know when we'd like to start our meal and neither was the vegetarian option tasteful. The sushi was dry and didn't taste fresh at all; this is the least you assume when eating in a high-end and highly priced establishement. The voucher seemed like great value for money, however, the 6 courses we received were nothing to write home about.

Words of advise; alter your menu…

The meal we had at Kyashii was so atrocious words can't describe it. It was insulting.

Someone must have thought very carefully on how to save costs to the maximum by offering a meal on the cheapest possible ingredients and the result is what you get at Kyashii. When I think Japanese food, I think of fresh succulent pieces of fish but that's not what you get here, what you get is paper thin slices of fish languishing on top of a monster rice portion and chicken in breadcrumbs where the chicken has been cut so thin you can barely see it.

The deco was also pretty atrocious, very clinical looking and full of bright lights not what I would recommend for a relaxing or even romantic meal!

The service was awful as well, the waiter kept trying to fit a huge bottle of beer into a small glass and he didn't care if the beer spilled everywhere he was adamant it had to fit and he did it twice! It was such a disaster.

We left the restaurant feeling that we had been fed on batter, rice and breadcrumbs and ripped off.

Just took clients here for lunch and was not only embarassed by my choice but will never go back again. The most inept service I have ever encountered, we were sat for ages and had to request menus and drinks from a waitress. When my cilents wanted a soft drink, waitress had to go away then come back to tell us that wine, beer, water or green tea were the only choices, no cocacola, lemonade, juice or any other soft drinks. We couldn't believe it! Waiter didn't understand our orders and kept repeating them again and again and food took far too long to come. Not to mention the interior is incredibly 90's (which just seemed sterile and dated) and we were freezing cold sat in this big space against a white wall with space age pink circular disc lights and a glowing neon green bar. Made Roswell look appealing. Sashimi was fresh, but had to ask twice for soy sauce, then got only two individual soy sauce dishes instead of the 4 required, had to ask for this of course. Soft shell crab “salad” consisted of 4 slightly cold, watery and less than fresh pieces upended on a plate like stone henge round some flaccid looking lettuce. Mains? Where were the mains, an hour later they appeared, not til after my client going down to the bathroom heard the manager bellowing, where are the effing table **'s mains?!! Duck arrived cold, salmon luke warm and beef slightly hotter. Where was our rice, where was the black cod? They asked did we want the rice later with the black cod…uhh no, would be nice with our current cold main dishes thank you. Flavours of mains were there if only the timings had been right. All in all appalling service was the worst thing about this experience, I forgot to mention sleazy/greasy comments by waiter to top it off, just what you need, although perhaps some are flattered??

I came here a while ago with my boyfriend and took my friends here to give it another go recently. We came for a bit of a catch up and adored it. There was even something for my vegetarian friend, who is very hard to please! It was a little empty, but that is probably because it was a lunchtime in the middle of the week. Apart from that the staff were as fabulous as usual and the food delicious, I will defiantly be going back!

A few weeks ago me and my partner came here for a couple of cocktails. Our waiter was a real asset, recommending a variety of cocktails I have never tried before. I was quick to take him up on a Kia Martini, which was a delicious mix of strawberries and vodka perfect for a summer evening. My partner, of course went for his usual whisky sour – nothing new there! I would really recommend this place, especially the staff friendliness and knowledge. One of the best cocktails I’ve had in a while.

I recently had a business lunch here with some colleges and I have to strongly recommend the duck, it was cooked to perfection. My colleague felt that it was a little quiet , as it wasn't very full at lunchtime, but overall I had a good experience.

I went back again with my boyfriend after my last foray here last year was just to the bar

We went on a Wednesday evening so it was a bit quieter than the weekend but lovely nonetheless, i have to say i am in love with the Lobser they do! What a good choice that was, i think i should have ordered two!

They were sampling a new cocktail called Japanese Assassin so we gorged on those – the colour matched their yellow neon surroundings! it's a Midori style cocktail and i'd definitely recommend asking for this (it's not on the menu so you'd have to request it!)

all in all a really lovely romantic night had by both of us.

Unfortunately this is not a very good restaurant. Bear in mind that we didn't try much beyond the sushi/maki a la carte selection. The quality of the fish was fine but meagre, the rolls could have done a better job of highlighting the fish rather than the other additions. The sushi rice was cold and cloying, none of the bite (nor warmth) that one gets from a well-executed nigiri. We accompanied our meal with edamame (more wilted than plump) and ebi tempura (actually pretty good).

Service was very scattered. Drink orders were made but the waitress seemed unfamiliar with the names of the cocktails on their list. Sake had to be requested multiple times. Desserts for another table were delivered to us. For the price, I would have expected a more professional operation.

In terms of the environment, the venue is undoubtably stylish…one could see enoying a spectaular meal there had the food been up to scratch. Strangely, the tables all have a chrome hump in the centre which makes sharing dishes a real challenge. The trek to the toilets is a display of the current trends in nightclub design.

Kyashii is a standard concept in a nice package that doesn't hold up the side on execution…I don't see myself returning.

    Dont go. It's over priced.

The food is really salty and although the service is efficient, there's a shortage of smiles. We had previously paid for 7 courses on an offer scheme. The meal cost £23 × 2 instead of £65 × 2 plus wine. This was a great offer but there's no way the meal was worth £65 each. However they still had automatically added the gratuity to my bill as if i had paid the full price.

I wont go again and I dont recommend it. Nice fish tank though :)

I've had the pleasure of going to Kyashii a couple of times now.
    One word: AWESOME.
The dining experiance is fantastic, they have some very special private rooms there too, including one surrounded by fish tanks built into the wall. Simply fantastic including the lighting.
Food quality – excellent. Food variety – excellent. Service – excellent. Cocktail Bar – prob just about the right size as its intimate but roomy enough to breath and spread out. Great cocktail list too.
I also seriously recommend speaking with the sommelier as well. Talk about passionate and knowledgeable!
A lot of this business I guess is attention to detail, they've done that and done it well.
If you're looking to impress a date, a business colleague, friends, family.. then this has to genuinely be on the list of venues.

I went to Kyashii last night and felt the need to write my first ever review for a restaurant! The place looks fabulous (very flashy but I like that kind of thing…) and the food was good, not excellent, but good and we felt the prices were very reasonable. The cocktails were delicious and the wine list, although limited, were very affordable.
Our issue lay with the service. As with another review, the waitress rushed us and at one point ‘told’ us to finish the last gyoza so that she could clear the plates for the main courses. Call me old fashioned but I've always felt it customary for main courses to be held until the appetiser or starters are finished… at the customer's own pace! She was exceptionally rude throughout the meal and when the bill came, with the added 12.5% service charge, we asked for it to be removed. I have never done that before and usually very much dislike the kinds of people that are mean with tips but the poor service really warranted it.
To end on a good note, however, when the supervisor realised that we were not pleased with the service he bent over backwards to apologise and insist that service should not be paid if the customer is not satisfied. He was truly charming and single-handedly won back our custom as we will definitely be returning. If the same surly waitress is assigned to our table, however, I think we'd ask to be moved sharpish!

Just returned from Kyashii. Quite possibly one of the worst meals out in London I've ever had. Well, to be fair, the food wasn't that bad, other than it was delivered to the table at such a pace it suggested they wanted you out of the door yesterday. It was more the service. Its been a long time since I've experienced such rudeness and attitude, especially from a place where you're paying quite a lot of money for, at best, mediocre food. Much, much better places around. Take my advice and avoid like the plague.

I have never been a lover of Japanesse food but the introduction I had to Japanesse food from Kyashii is such that I have suddenly become a lover of these type of food. The food served was complimented by the service that the staff therein provided, which can only be described as execellent. The light in the dinning area was not too bright and it allows for an intimate romantic ocassion if you so wish.

The surround and atmosphere was also superb together with the internal decoration of the dinning area. I was also lucky to sit in the upstair lounge whilst waiting for our table to be prepared. Our reservation was for 10pm but due to parking problem, we did not arrive until about 10.20pm. Despite this, all we needed was a simple telephone call to describe our ordeal and the nice voice of the lady that we spoke to was indeed very reassuring, advising that our arriving late for our reservation would not be a problem. This was the reason why we were taken to the waiting/mini bar upstairs, to have a drink whilst our table was been prepared. The sitting area here was excellent and the lightening was just right.

The evening we had at Kyashii was excellent and I can not wait to return to try the other dishes i have yet to taste. To the management of Kyashii, I say keep the high standard that you have set for yourself up.

Having never been to Kyashii and living on the South Coast, we were not quite sure what to expect.
However, after arriving at the entrance we were immediately aware that we would be in for something special.
Reservation confirmed, we were taken by a very friendly receptionist to the Kyashii Lounge, where we tried some of the house cocktails which were expertly made and delicious. The lounge had comfortable seating and made you feel at ease. We were given a little tour of the venue by Melissa who is guest relations and were shown the various dining areas including the Chefs table where, if you care to open the curtains, you are able to see the chefs slaving away. A wonderful setting for a group of 8 to 10.
We certainly needed some guidance during the tour, as the corridors between the dining areas were very dark with led lights at the bottom. We finally were shown to our very comfortable table and received a menu which fortunately was in English. My wife and I decided to have different items which we would share. This turned out to be an excellent idea as the portions were ideal for sharing. Starters: Minced Pork Gyoza and Unagi (eel) served with soya sauce; it looked beautiful and tasted delightful. This was followed by the Dragon Rolls,( tempura prawns with thin slices of avocado wrapped outside) which we would definitely have again. we then went on to the main course with Grilled Black Cod Fillet with Saikyo Miso Marinates and Pan Fried Beef Fillet Steak Strips with Dynamite Mustard Sauce served with shredded deep fried chilli and Lotus roots chips. The black cod is as good as I have had before and probably better. The dynamite mustard sauce is explosive but great. Will I go back? “ You bet” as there are so many dishes left on the menu we would like to try.

Went to try this place out yesterday. The service was execellent. Atmosphere was a bit bright, not ideal for intimate romantic dinners but very comfortable otherwise. The food was fantasic, and the Prawns in wasabi sauce is a must try! The Black cod was also comparable to that of Hakuba.
There is also a very slick bar upstairs, but we didn't have time to try it out. The cocktails looked good though.
There is a 50% off until the end of August which was great, however, the portions are smaller than I expected. It's a place where you pay for quality, not size. Overall, Kyashii a wonderful addition to the ranks of high end restaurants in Covent Garden.
