An old waterman’s inn tucked off the main drag over Wandsworth Bridge, The Ship has been a south London favourite for years & still has everything going for it. There are great spaces for drinking & eating, a light conservatory, & a large garden with river views: ideal for the popular summer barbecues. Inside, the food’s pretty decent too in a mod Med/gastropub way – start with scallop with pea & pancetta tortellini or beef carpaccio, continue with lamb rump & black pudding, shepherd’s pie or lemon sole with crayfish butter, & finish with pub classics such as lemon burnt cream. The Young’s/Wells beers are in sparkling condition, but the well-priced wine is worth serious consideration too (give the nod to the barman & he’ll slip you the ‘big wine’ list).
