Square Meal review of Aaya:
The brainchild of Gary Yau (brother of restaurant supremo Alan) this smart, sharply designed Japanese newcomer seems slightly out of sync with Brewer Street’s bars & low-key eateries, with its sleek monochrome furnishings, trendily attired staff & attractive full-length bar. The kitchen delivers bold, inventive flavours & high levels of pristine presentation. Assorted sashimi – pert slices of sea bream, yellowtail & scallop – melted in the mouth, while little Kumamoto oysters were full of fresh sea zing. Cooked dishes were equally well rendered, including silky Chilean sea bass flashed on the robata grill with a gentle yuzu dressing. The food is undoubtedly good, but portions are small & the menu isn’t quite as good value as it initially appears. Drinks are also pricey: a delicious Tokyo grape cocktail (Wyborowa vodka, grape, elderflower & apple juice) was £9 for a small measure, while white wines start at £18.
