Square Meal review of Bangalore Express:
Yogesh Datta, chef/patron of Bangalore Express, made a name for himself with one of London’s best upmarket Indians, The Painted Heron. But his new establishment is aimed at a more casual market. The one-sheet, pan-Indian menu is cheap and cheerful, offering a collection of tapas-sized items, dosas, low-fat options, build-your-own plates of curry and rice, and even Indian calzone. From the tapas selection, the duck, cashew nut and raisin roll combines subtle spicing and nutty flavours, while a curry and rice plate of lamb jalfrezi, sweet potato salad and tamarind rice offers a filling meal for under a tenner. On the downside, Indian calzone turns out to be nothing more than buttery Indian bread wrapped around a dry meat curry, while service can be haphazard. Despite these pitfalls, the restaurant has been doing roaring business with a mainly young clientele. The attractive canteen-style interior is also notable for its quirky bunk bed-style seating, with top-deck tables reached by a short ladder.
