Square Meal Review of King's Road Steakhouse & Grill ?

The words ‘established 2008’ emblazoned on the front of the King’s Road Steakhouse & Grill suggest that co-owner Marco Pierre White is in this venture for the long haul. But then again, peddling top-quality meat to affluent Chelsea residents is a sure-fire business plan if ever there was one. The menu doesn’t change often, with starters including the likes of beetroot & goats’ cheese salad or chicken liver parfait with Madeira jelly. However, it’s the grilled beef that gets rave reviews: ‘perfectly timed’ Scottish steaks – from 8oz fillet to a massive 16oz T-bone – come with triple-cooked chips & a ‘divine’ béarnaise sauce. Eton mess & Cambridge burnt cream are the top calls from a patriotic dessert menu. The place also scores with its glammed-up, split-level interiors & friendly, ‘accommodating’ service.

Good food, but the service was SO SLOW! Not just the waiting staff, clearly they need to speed up in the kitchen. Needs one of Marco's famous kicks up the rear.

I have been here many times and confess as it was just around the corner I used to come here with my girlfriends when I didn't want to cook dinner. The food is delicious and although the menu doesn't change often it is always reliable and the steak is beautiful and tender. I am not the first person to go straight for the meaty option on a menu but the steak ordered by a friend of mine once looked so tempting that I ordered it the next time and didn't regret it. Of course, with steak comes chips and their special triple cooked chips are just divine. One particular girlfriend has said she now misses them all the way from the other side of the world!

The manager and rest of the staff are lovely and always very accommodating and friendly. We would often turn up at the last minute and they would make a real effort to fit us in.

So if you are in the mood for comfort food then I can recommend this place!

We had lunch here his week with a special offer. We ‘started’ with their champagne cocktail which was absolutely sublime – best cocktail I have had in years!! We were served very boring bread (the only let down) and butter. We both chose the10oz steak which was delicious, perfectly cooked with a divine, what tasted like a homemade bearnaise – fantastic. With this we ordered the tripled cooked chips, best ever and a yummy mixed small leaf salad which was the perfect accompaniement for the steak and chips. We shared a very generous British cheese plate (cheddar, Cornish Yarg, stilton and a goats cheese) with a bunch of grapes and celery and for us rather disappointing Carrs cheese biscuits (each to their own!!). We then shared Cambridge Burnt Cream (creme brulee) which was perfect. With the meal we enjoyed a bottle of Malbec from Argentina (where my friend has just returned frm!). The service was very good, just one waiter and at one stage x10 customers. The interior is lovely and very refreshing. The choice of music, well, interesting I suppose. Finally a warning to those who suffer from vertigo – the stairs down to the cloakrooms – no railing to hold on to – worth mentioning. Definitely going there again and will be strongly recommending to friends.

The place is very small and the tables are very tightly packed.. much like previous reports…we went with high expectations. There was obviously problems with over-booking but we got our table. Without so much as a hello we had the menus thrust in front of us, simultaneously being asked what drinks we would like. Menu was limited and they had run out of a few things such as the soups and crab. One menu was an old one that had meals and wines that they no longer served. So we ordered the belly pork starters and some steaks for mains. Once ordered the meals came quick and fast… as the starters left there was no more than 5 mins gone before the main course came along. …still masticating the pork we moved on . Steaks were ‘ordinary’ to say the least..the mushroom and tomatoes I think were equal in size to the meat …they forgot one portion of chips ( came as we were finishing )…and the veg was cold On completion , the main plates were taken and we were immediately asked what deserts we would like. With 1 1/2 bottles of red yet to be drunk we asked for more time. ..we got 10 mins before we were asked again…still 1 bottle left…10 mins later again… so I ordered 2 more bottles to put a conclusiosn to it. We had not even been sat more than an hour at the stage when we realised that the place was packed to the rafters and the VERY small bar had at least 8 people waiting to be sat. From the comments and people walking out it was onbvious they had over booked and the pressure was on to get tables cleared. Well I wasnt going to pay good money to eat ,gulp and get indegestion ! They now sussed out that I wasn't going to be rushed. The waiters then got very worried when everyone kept asking for the menus thinking they were going to ask for more food…but it was purely to FAN ourselves..the temperature of the restaurant got so hot .. More arguments ensued with people not being sat. …you get the picture… Marco has been sitting on his reputation for as long as he has had that overcoat of his ! Similarly to Lanes inthe City …his restaurants are begining to thin like his new Gravy stock ! He needs to get the level of food and attentiveness of staff UP to the dizzy heights he beleives he holds! .If he would only change the menus as much as he changed his women and perhaps removed one or two tables, people would be able to eat with the persons they came with and not the guests at the next table. Get it sorted Marco ..there is a lot of good competition out there… you'll be joining the ranks of Gordon Ramsey soon at this rate …
