Mercifully, the nightmarish Scream bar that haunted this Victorian tram maintenance depot has gone, replaced by the latest offering from mini-chain Antic (the people behind The Dogstar in Brixton among others). The vast tram shed ranges over two floors, broken into seating groups, staged as suburban front parlours. The decor is literally rubbish, plundered from car-boot sales & wittily reassembled to fabulous effect. Amstel heads a cast of beers that includes Grolsch & Timothy Taylor Landlord. All the 20 wines offered, including an entry-level Tempranillo at £11.95, leave change out of £20. A varied programme of social events includes arts & craft nights, burlesque, DJs, live music – country & bluegrass, perhaps – & big-game action on discreetly placed screens. With food starting to be served from early 2009 you should tootle down to Tooting tout de suite.

This place is FAB and just what Tooting needed. Balham and Clapham have long had trendy bars, and now tooting has joined in for all the people who would love to live elsewhere but just cant afford it.
Great beer/cider/wine selections – random stuff but thats what you want (unless you are a chav who does not like change and who would have preferred the Scream pub that it was before). Service also good, and able to offer recommendations.
Somewhere you can go and curl up on a leather sofa by a fire, and hear yourself think! great if you know your friends are often late as you dont feel out of place sitting by yourself watching people. Big Screens show films and the mishmash of furniture offers a laid back feel.
I love the place, and just hope more bars like this come to Tooting. For reference, the Balham Bowls Club is owned by the same people.

I'm very sorry but I have to say I preferred the appallingly awful student venue this used to be – at least it had an honest feel about it where as this place seems so completely pretentious and contrived it's impossible to enjoy. Service gets an 8 mark but then again it's not hard to provide good bar service. It would fit in nicely if located in the “Nappy Valley” of Northcote Road but seems very out of place. Last time I went I noticed a sign about bag searches on the door – not sure if that's still the policy but in any case I will be avoiding.
