Square Meal review of Bourne & Hollingsworth:
Bourne & Hollingsworth is not much bigger than one of the fitting rooms at the defunct Oxford Street department store from which it takes its name, but size is in inverse proportion to character at this winningly retro basement bar. Lace doilies and tea-rose wallpaper, last fashionable around the time of the abdication, whisk you back to the Home Counties circa 1931. As well as encouraging literary salons, society games and the lost art of conversation, B&H promotes period tipples. White lady, gin fizz and gimlet (as well as more modern £7.50 cocktails), served with cup cakes and macaroons, echo an era when witty and gay did not imply Stephen Fry. That said, Fry would surely love the idea of hooch hidden in soda siphons and teapots, all part of the fun on Prohibition party nights, when guests in flapper-girl attire and their Jimmy Cagney-style boyfriends tool up on £4 shooters such as goodnight kiss (Campari, Champagne, Angostura and gomme).
