The best restaurants in Reading

Reading is the largest town in the United Kingdom, a fact that creates as much pride as it does frustration with the inhabitants. Besides that, it is famous for its good shopping areas, the annual festival that draws world famous stars and travellers from across the globe, the birthplace of Ricky Gervais, and the place of imprisonment for Oscar Wilde. But the reputation for restaurants and food is not as strong as it should be. So, we here at SquareMeal have comprised a list of restaurants that should set the record straight on this matter, proving a love of good food stretched this far up the Thames.

Updated on 11 October 2023

In the town centre there is a large collection of Reading restaurants that aim to service the great number of shoppers throughout the week, plenty of chains and fast-food joints amongst a growing number of restaurants with culinary aspirations and established renowned restaurants with reputations spanning much further than places with an RG postcode.

Outside the town centre, getting into the suburbs, there are restaurants and cafes that have become family favourites down the years, and not just because of their easiness and cheap prices. No, some of these places feature on this list because they are genuinely great places to eat, and not necessarily with a big bill at the end.

At the boundaries of the town, there are plenty of old pubs, inns, and gastropubs that have been transformed into venues of excellent gastronomic experiences. These places may be a drive away from the town centre, but that drive will definitely be worth it after consideration of the meal had. Traditions hold their value in Reading and the surrounding areas, and the footprint they leave can be found in the quality of the produce grown and reared by local farmers and growers, aiding the excellent quality of the ingredients used by many of these restaurants.
