At first glance, with a faux food truck as a centrepiece and its yellow and white chairs, Amelie could be mistaken for a contemporary pizza joint. In reality though, the restaurant specialises in flammekueche, which is traditional dish of tarte flambée originating from the Alsace region in France.
Flammekueche typically consists of a thinly-stretched dough base, spread with crème fraiche, sliced onion, bacon and gruyere cheese. The dish cooks in under two minutes and Amelie offers up various toppings to try – barbecue chicken for example, or salmon with spinach and ricotta.
It’s not all about the flammekueche though – guests can start off with tapas-style appetisers, including bruschetta and roasted aubergine, while a selection of sweet treats features Sicilian lemon sponge and a sticky toffee pudding. The aforementioned food truck actually serves as Amelie’s bar, turning out a range of wines, fizz and beers, including the restaurant’s own golden ale from the local Nethergate Brewery.
