Square Meal Review of Zucca ?

Food with “little fuss but huge flavour” defines proper Italian cooking, and readers wholeheartedly agree that stylish, modish Zucca is up to the mark. There’s no shortage of praise for this “great-value restaurant serving the best ingredients”. Much like what’s on the plate, the venue itself is confidently minimalist (white walls, small white tables, grey chairs), with the most prominent feature being wide glass windows ideal for people-watching. A short, daily changing menu moves with the seasons and is dictated strictly by what’s good and when. This doctrine comes across with clarity in buttery polenta spiked with tangy blue ewe’s cheese Basajo, or smoky, meaty grilled octopus enlivened by fresh mint and capers. A pannacotta rounds things off with a near-perfect wobble. Waiters seem to have a genuine passion for the food, and the “awesome” all-Italian wine list (arranged by region) also shows commitment to the mother country – though annotations would be helpful.

    Lady Aga :: Zucca Restaurant

    Oh Zucca, let me count the ways… elegant, seasonal and simplicity have become slightly cliched buzz-words for modern Italian dining but there’s a reason for this. It’s a winning formula and if it ain’t broke… another of Zucca’s joys lies in their thoroughly affordable menu; on the latest visit there wasn’t a main course over £17...

    Drifting Epicure :: Zucca

    Zucca is a modern Italian restaurant on Bermondsey street not far from London Bridge, almost next to the contemporary art gallery White Cube which by the way is a must visit when you’re around. There is no lack of restaurants in the area and it might be worth taking a walk to the nearby Spa Terminus where you will find independent food producers tucked into the railway arches selling their produce.

    Walking into the visually peaceful environment of Zucca is not what I’m used to when it comes to Italian restaurants but then I usually go to more casual places for Italian food. Despite the somewhat sterile interior...

  1. Zucca has been one of our favourite restaurants for a long time and we’ve been more often than I can count. We hadn’t been for a while as last year we wanted to try out new restaurants, that we had never been to before. But it’s impossible to stay away from Zucca for too long. Tourists complain about the ‘long’ walk from the tube station to the restaurant. Us Londoners do not bat an eye-lash at the prospect of walking 5-10 mins to get our hands on some good grub and good grub is to be found here at Zucca...

    Samphire and Salsify :: Zucca

    Bermondsey Street isn’t short of good places to eat but Zucca is one of the originals. It’s a modern Italian restaurant based at the Bermondsey Square end of the street and it’s always packed whenever I walk past.

    The dining room was a very attractive space; flooded with natural light, white walls, thick grey carpet, comfortable chairs and modern art hanging on the walls designed by a local artist. It was the perfect place for a relaxed Saturday lunch. There’s an open plan kitchen too which is so un-obtrusive you’d easily forget it’s there...

  1. We love to visit Zucca for a lazy weekend lunch and the bright open interior with big glass windows offers a perfect midday dining setting. We’ve visited many many times and not once have we been disappointed and many times Zucca surprised us and our guests on the upside. It is true that the dishes have gotten a bit more pricey of late, but the menu prices in the opening days of the restaurant, were just so low that several restaurateurs have confided in me that they just could not understand how Zucca was able to operate on such a low margin, given the quality of the produce used...

  1. Zucca means pumpkin in Italian, I have no idea why they named the restaurant after a pumpkin, but hey it’s catchy and yes there is a dish called Zucca. The spacious restaurant boasts a super sleek and sophisticated outlook, with modern white furnishing with plenty of natural lighting beaming through. The open kitchen allows you to see the chefs at work...

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: Zucca, Sept 2012

    Zucca has been one of my favourite restaurants in London for a while now. The balance between price / quality of cooking is brilliant and the quality of ingredients is superb. Recently, one of their main chefs left to head up the kitchen at the Table and so I was keen to try Zucca again to see how they got on. And I’m happy to report that Zucca is as good as ever...

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: Zucca, Nov 2013

    What is on offer: Without a doubt one of London’s best restaurants. When it opened its doors it sent shockwaves across London’s culinary scene and after several years it is still one of the most talked about restaurants in London. A big part of the reason why Bermonsey street is now considered one of London’s top culinary streets is due to Zucca. The ingredients are carefully chosen and as a result all the dishes taste so fresh. If you’ve never been, shame on you...

    andmorefood :: zucca, london

    fantastically fresh italian food down in bermondsey, near london bridge. this is my second visit to zucca, three years after my first one and boy has it lived up to my memories and hence inflated expectations.

    I think of zucca as a very japanese italian restaurant, and I don’t mean that it is
    some sort of confusion. rather, much of japanese cooking is about retaining and enhancing the flavours of fantastic ingredients, and showcasing lots of traditional styles and methods at a very high standard, and this is what zucca does...

  1. I headed to Zucca one weekday evening for an early dinner with my best friend and his girlfriend. We decided to share a couple of antipasti dishes to start: seabass carpaccio, pumpkin fritti and a mixed platter including mozzerella and roasted peppers. For mains I had the line caught squid and the others opted for the cappelletti with girolles and the veal ragu. The standout dish of the evening was definitely the squid; tender and full of flavour. I’m a big fan of raw / cured fish too so the carpaccio was also a winner...
