Squaremeal Review of Winteringham Fields ?

It’s always been “a jewel in the middle of nowhere”, but Colin McGurren’s tenure at this beautiful restaurant-with-rooms out in the north Lincolnshire flatlands has taken it from strength to strength. He inherited a venue with an unassailable reputation for good food, but continues to raise the bar, focusing his cooking on local suppliers as well as home-grown produce from an increasingly productive kitchen garden. Although he’s steeped in the French classical tradition, Colin’s output is typical of top-end modern British cuisine, and his “ever-changing” repertoire is crowned by ‘surprise’ tasting menus running to seven or nine courses (‘fried from South Ferriby beach’, ‘baked from the fields’, ‘mi-cuit, WF greens five ways’ and so on). In practice, this might mean mushroom tea and Parmesan foam with beetroot meringue and foie gras parfait, halibut with caramelised fennel, Ibérico ham and mulled wine, salt-baked squab pigeon, and desserts such as pear, almond and white chocolate cheesecake with fresh pear, amaretto and pear sorbet. Meanwhile, the “fantastic” wine list promises glorious sips from around the globe. In short a “fine, fine restaurant”.
