Square Meal Review of White Horse Inn ?

More widely known as the ‘Pub with No Name’ & billed as Hampshire’s highest hostelry, this isolated former 17th-century farmhouse is devilishly tricky to find. Inside it seems that time & gastro-makeovers have passed it by too. Two dark, parlour-like bars set the mood with their old beams, brown walls & ceilings, log fires, dripping candles & lived-in furniture, while nostalgic bric-a-brac (including a ticking long-case clock) fills every conceivable space. Beer lovers come in their droves to quaff up to eight different real ales, & the food fits the bill too – hearty, classic, no-nonsense favourites along the lines of O’Hagans sausages served with bubble & squeak & caramelised onion gravy or char-grilled rib-eye steak, plus cheesecake or chocolate brownie for pud. There’s a restaurant out back, but the bars have all the charm, while the garden affords rolling views.
