Hard by the Royal Mile, within easy reach of Edinburgh Castle & the Scottish Parliament, Whiski does exactly what it says on the tin. Top billing naturally goes to a highly detailed list of
nigh on 300 different malts & blends including a comprehensive selection of Lowland names such as the so-called ‘Edinburgh malt’ from the Glenkinchie Distillery. But there’s plenty more to
distract curious drinkers, including a terrific cocktail selection & a cracking range of Scottish craft beers. The food also has a Scottish flavour, with haggis ‘towers’, Cullen skink, venison
steaks & Atlantic salmon (with whisky & orange jus) all appearing on the menu alongside burgers, pies & pastas. Live Scottish music ramps up the patriotic vibe every evening. An
offshoot called the Whiski Rooms sets out its stall as an all-day bar/bistro & whisky shop at 4-7 North Bank Street (0131 225 7224).
One of our great early quests was to the Whiski Rooms, where we discovered exceptionally good soup. It was so impressive that it was our choice for Xmas Lunch that year. I’d never got round to visiting their nearby sister bar, but rectified that, today.A traditional dark wood and green leather place, it has a nice pub feel to it. Located on the High Street, it certainly has to cater to a tourist market, but is doing so in a way that’s accessible to locals and visitors alike...
