Square Meal Review of Viajante (closed) ?

Embarking on the ‘blind tasting’ option of up to 12 courses at Nuno Mendes’ trailblazer is either a white-knuckle ride or a joyride, depending on your openness to avant-garde techniques and boundary-pushing cuisine. However, readers are unanimously bowled over by this serious, yet surprisingly relaxed haven of ‘exchange and discovery’ with its ‘ridiculously innovative’ food, intriguing boutique wines and contemporary surrounds. Viajante means ‘traveller’ in Portuguese, and eating here is a revelatory odyssey full of extraordinary sensations: langoustine with presa (pork shoulder) and smoked enoki mushrooms; brill with duck tongue, beetroot and toasted milk; Jerusalem artichoke, chocolate soil and blood orange (that’s a dessert, by the way). Go for a table by the open kitchen if you want to take in the full culinary show. There may be a ‘few challenges’– not least the bill – but fans confirm thewhole trip is ‘very special indeed’.

  1. I was recently in London to embark on what can only be described as an epic week of eating. Over five days my fellow travelling companions and I ate at eight different restaurants with eight Michelin stars between them (reviews to follow, eventually). The damage to my waistline (and wallet) notwithstanding, it was a fantastic and truly memorable trip and confirmed to me just how exciting the food scene in London is right now. One of the highlights of the trip has to have been a monumentally good lunch at Viajante...

    SamTheFoodFan :: Viajante

    I always knew this one would blow the budget! But when I heard that Nuno Mendes, Chef/Patron at Viajante, was moving on after 4 years, I didn't care. I had missed one of my bucket list restaurants when it closed at the end of January and I refused to miss another one!

    Viajante is located at the Bethnal Green Town Hall, which has been converted into a beautiful Art Deco hotel in the heart of the East End. Truth be told, the area isn't great but on a beautiful day like it was on this Sunday with the bright blue sky and sunshine behind it, the building stands majestically on an otherwise drab road...

    samphire and salsify :: Viajante

    I must start by saying this was the most exciting lunch we’ve had in London (not including The Cube which doesn’t count as it’s a pop-up restaurant). It was up there with the excitement we felt when we visited Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, only that meal cost £150 per person for food alone, lunch at Viajante...

    FoodiesOnTheProwl FoodiesOnTheProwl :: Viajante, Dec 2013

    What is on offer: Probably the most creative Michelin dining experience in London. Chef parton Nuno Mendes has been a fixture in the London food scene for years and with Viajante he pushes on at the frontier of molecular gastronomy..

  1. We’ve been massive fans of Nuno Mendes’ Viajante for a few years now and each time we go we’re blown away by his cooking. And this time was no different.

    We recently chose Viajante as the best restaurant experience of 2012 and rightfully so. The cooking at Viajante is highly innovative, skilled and tasteful. Having eaten at many top restaurants in the world we would rank Viajante up there with the best of them...

    Drifting Epicure :: Viajante

    Trend is both a blessing and a curse in East London for any business owner trying to win over the sensitive crowd. Pop-up stalls seems to be a recipe for success judging by the number of them I’ve seen over the past years. There are however restaurants that’s proved their right of existence and Viajante is one of them.

    Located just north of Bethnal Green station inside the retro chic Town Hall Hotel Viajante offers one of the most innovative menus I’ve tried in London. The Michelin star and 59th place on the San Pellegrino list Viajante holds is the result of Nuno Mendes’ international experience and hard...
