Aiming to bring the vibes of St Mark's Square to St James’s Market, Veneta is the latest opening from the Salt Yard group. Taking stylistic inspiration from all-day, Venetian-style grande cafés, the double-height dining room features a mezzanine floor while outside, an alfresco terrace overlooks the new development's pedestrianised zone. Food-wise, think classic Venice, including a raw bar offering a selection of seasonal seafood, as well as artisan charcuterie and cheeses served from a hand-carved trolley. For breakfast sip on fresh coffee alongside white polenta, raisin and cinnamon porridge with a crème brûlée-style top, or saffron custard-filled doughnuts. Large T-bone steaks for sharing come later in the day, as well as spice-infused, classic Venetian recipes along the lines of squid ragu with red wine, cardamom and cumin. The wine list pays homage to its heritage, with selections exclusively from Northern Italy. The look and feel of Veneta is more opulent than anything chef director Ben Tish and co-founder Simon Mullins of Salt Yard have opened before, hinting at an ambitious future for the five-strong restaurant group.
