That Vauxhall should have a destination restaurant would have sounded like an oxymoron a decade or so ago, but so successful has the renovation of the area been that it now seems normal that Counter should take that moniker. Making use of one of the many old railway arches and serving a comfortable mix of American and French cooking including blackened chicken, rainbow carrots and charred corn or brioche bun burgers with swiss cheese, the kitchen has plenty of bases covered. You can also expect skate wings, clams, samphire and beure blanc, alongside well-constructed salads. Guests sit up at the long, beautifully lit counter or snuggle in to a booth for more privacy, quaffing cocktails and decent wine; swap wine for Bloody Marys when the weekend comes round for brunch.
One way or another, I have spent a substantial proportion of the past fifteen years in Vauxhall’s railway arches. Moving to the area in 2000 just as the gay scene was migrating out of central London to the then–ungentrified wilds of SW8, I discovered along with my old-uni-friends flatmates the delights of 24-hour partying. You could, as for four or five sybaritic years we did, go out on a Friday night and not come home until Monday lunchtime, with somewhere to suit all tastes and peccadilloes from the dank, damp, deep-house all-nighters at Viaduct – now the superclub Fire – where you couldn’t officially buy...

Last week I went for dinner with my boyfriend and his best mate to Counter. Usually I always choose where to go, but considering his best mate likes Dishoom and Bone Daddies I was happy to make an exception this time. Vauxhall is certainly not the place that comes in mind when you think about fancy restaurants...but I guess Counter is the exception.Counter is a modern brasserie style place, based in one of the arches of Vauxhall station (next to Dirty Burger). The restaurant is divided into two area: a restaurant at the front and a cocktail bar at the back. The decoration is modern with booths and marble tables...

London and New York have been compared and contrasted so many times but I stand by what I&ve said in previous years:They say New York is a city that never sleeps. London does, but then it wakes up and it wakes you up exactly when you need it to. You can easily get lost in all its pride and glory but this is when you realise the many ways you have been &found&.I&ve been told many times "You&re definitely much of a New Yorker more than a Londoner!" There may be a slight truth to that but in my heart of hearts I know London is my home and I love this city more than anywhere else.Admittedly though,...

BackCOUNTER Lounge, COUNTER’s little brother with its own bar and separate dining and entertainment area, is Vauxhall’s new ‘playground’ providing that slightly naughty edgy feel to a good night out. Inspired by New York’s vibrant Hell’s Kitchen district, BackCOUNTER has established itself as one of London’s best cocktail lounges.

An edgy New York-style brasserie set under a railway arch is well and truly on the right tracks.Things are ever-so-slowly changing around Vauxhall, as the railway arches and its surrounds become populated with restaurants of serious reputation, alongside the area’s numerous cafes and bars.
