Square Meal Review of Vanilla Black ?

“Overwhelmingly original” and “leftfield” are two of the verdicts on this high-end vegetarian restaurant. Chef Andrew Dargue eschews pasta bakes and lentil curries in favour of inventive ideas often centred on a single ingredient, although the results are sometimes more bemusing than beguiling. A starter of Brie ice cream, its farmyard whiff dulled by freezing, might work better as a pud, while desserts are a curious mix of sweet and savoury – from white chocolate and cep custard to strange, fishy-tasting smoked paprika fudge. In between, field mushroom mousse with rosemary sauce, mushy peas and horseradish packs an umami punch, although menus aren’t always true to the season – witness ash-baked celeriac or yellow pea soup with Marmite dumplings in high summer. Prices are steep, but the food wins friends: “I’ll be back, with or without veggie companions”, comments one carnivorous convert.
