BEN MURPHY WILL LEAVE ON 1 JANUARY 2017 TO PURSUE OTHER PROJECTS IN LONDON
This restaurant from chef-of-the-moment Ben Murphy was named Champagne Laurent-Perrier London Restaurant of the Year back in June and it’s easy to see why. Located next to a tattoo parlour on an unassuming suburban street, The Woodford has a distinct secret member’s club vibe, which is only enforced by the plush grey booths and mirrored walls inside. The old school glamour never feels gimmicky however. A glance at the menu shows that head chef Ben Murphy’s dishes are British staples, yet a closer look proves they are classics reinvented. The canape selection includes a sweet-tasting red pepper jammy dodger biscuit, hinting at the unusual flavour combinations to come. Scallops, served with crunchy bacon crumbs, coriander and a coconut sauce were packed with flavour. We also recommend the pork four ways (served with calvados), the tenderness of which was complimented by the crispy crackling it came with. Murphy’s desserts are the most experimental however, combining white chocolate aero, raspberry and red pepper – a daring combination of flavours that he pulls off. The wine list is extensive and changes with the seasons, plus staff are knowledgeable and friendly. While three courses for £49 aligns itself more with central London prices, The Woodford is a triumph. Yet, with its ever increasing popularity, get down there quick - prices are likely to rise.
