Pork crackling with tangy Bramley apple sauce made a cracking opening, while wonderfully salty anchovy toast with Parmesan custard was satisfyingly tempered by the creamy, cheesy sauce. To follow, salt and pepper squid with oriental dressing had scant Asian influence, yet was crispy and surprisingly filling, and blue-shell Shetland mussels with bacon and cider melted in the mouth. For pud, hearty offerings include spotted dick. The extensive Old World wine list – brought by friendly staff smartly kitted out in jeans, tweed waistcoats and brogues – matches the food admirably.
