Located at the top of the New Town – not far from the Assembly Rooms and George Street – this well-appointed basement restaurant has quickly built up a loyal following and won a slew of awards for
its cuisine and service. Ostensibly a no-frills Indian nestling among a coterie of top-end art galleries, the Spice Pavilion specialises in food from the north-west of the subcontinent, using
recipes from areas such as Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad and Kashmir. While some of the 90-odd dishes are the usual curry-house suspects and oddball local hits (haggis samosas, for example), many are
less familiar creations with unusual names – think murgh seylonse, ajwaini jhingha and sabzi chamon bahar (steamed vegetables with ground cashews, cream and mango pulp). Prices are very reasonable,
with a two-course set lunch weighing in at £8.95 and some nifty wines from £12.95.
