Jesse Dunford Wood is more than a chef: he’s a hospitable restaurateur with a keen eye for design. His first solo venture is already a magnet for locals – from young mums with prams to the laptop crowd, couples in the evening and families at weekends. “Extremely inventive British pub food” is the draw; you can pop in for a pint or informal bar meal, or there’s a generous help-yourself breakfast with eggs, preserves, proper bread and a toaster. The separate dining room has quirky decor to make you LOL; otherwise, grab a table in the large garden or book the snug chef’s table where you’re served with much panache. The menu is peppered with humour (Dick Whittington’s knapsack-salt-crusted chicken, for instance, or cow pie), but the food is consistently wholesome and enticing – we rate the home-smoked salmon, macaroni cheese, salads and Sunday roasts.
Tucked away from Kensal Green’s popular Paradise, Parlour is a very welcome new addition to a very up and coming part of town. With a substantial pub pedigree behind the owners, Parlour does watering hole very well with an extensive list of ales and with beers coming from Hackney to Hawaii as well as some tongue in cheek twists on the cocktail list (we heard the Notting Hill Gypsy is fairly popular)...
