Opened in 2004 when the Northern Quarter was still the avant-garde choice for a night out, Jobe Ferguson’s first and most conventional venture (he’s also involved in Black Dog Ballroom, Cane & Grain and The Liars Club) has stuck around. The dining room is simple and comfortable, with abundant light from full-length windows, and there’s also space for a drink outside. The Brit brasserie menu has evolved at a stately pace, with head chef Anthony Fielden now turning out braised lambs’ tongue salad with green beans and salsa verde or seared scallops with Jerusalem artichoke and powdered roe to start. You’ll know you’re in the north west with slow-cooked Cheshire lamb shoulder with lamb chops or Pugh’s piglet stuffed with black pudding. An express lunch deal (two courses, £13.95) strips dishes back a little, and the occasional special event, including a six-course hip-to-heel food tour of Italy, keeps things interesting.
