London's only Michelin-starred pub continues to impress readers – a "top-notch, inventive gourmet experience in an informal setting" is just one effusive plaudit. Much of the plainly decorated room is dedicated to dining, but impeccably drilled staff ensure you feel equally at home propping up the bar with a pint of Meantime and a Scotch egg. Given that the pub is co-owned by Brett Graham (of The Ledbury fame), it's no surprise that the kitchen knows how to treat quality ingredients with respect. A starter of buttered crab muffins with pickled lemon features almost impossibly plump flecks of white meat, while mains are strong on seasonal game – perhaps wild boar with parsnip, wild mushrooms and smoked onion. Homely specials such as Herdwick lamb sausages with mash also have a touch of refinement, Sunday roasts are popular and the "excellent" wine list opens with a dozen by the glass.
My friends Kay and Georgia immediately suggested a Sunday roast dinner when we began planning our pre Manchester United versus Chelsea match day activities. Since we are all die-hard Man United fans and had gotten seats for a Sunday match at Chelsea stadium, they suggested a pre-game roast at the Michelin starred Harwood Arms in Fulham.
