Square Meal Review of The Gilbert Scott ?

Diners at The Gilbert Scott are still overawed by the high drama of this fabulously appointed “old school” dining room within the revitalised St Pancras Renaissance Hotel – a glorious mix of arched windows, gold leaf and giddily ornate ceilings. Luckily, all that opulence and generosity is tailor-made for Marcus Wareing’s exploration of Britain’s culinary heritage – what one lyrical reader calls “love notations to cooks from a bygone era”. Expect to be entertained by the likes of Dorset crab with pickled greengage and cobnuts, crispy pig’s head with cockles, laverbread mayo and sea vegetables, rib of Cumbrian beef or Mrs Beeton’s “extraordinary” snow egg with a marmalade ‘yolk’. Afternoon tea is a delight, Sunday roasts are a big occasion, and weekend brunch is also staged in the main restaurant. Service is sometimes more John Betjeman branch line than InterCity express.

    Kings X Girl :: Gilbert Scott- deja vu disappointments

    While I love the very central life of living around King’s Cross, I must say that the culinary choices just around (although growing) are limited and I mostly have to stroll to the Angel area to get something decent. Therefore, it was a pleasant surprise when a friend suggested the Gilbert Scott, just next to King’s Cross/St Pancras.

    Walking in up the stairs from Euston road, through the bar area into the restaurant the atmosphere of the brasserie with high ceilings and elegant interior seemed promising...

    The Hungry Porker :: The Gilbert Scott

    There are few better symbols of the area’s rebirth than the St. Pancras building. Finally getting off the train in London no longer dashes your hopes of what the big city might have in store. With this grand building, comes The Gilbert Scott. In itself this is a sure sign that King’s Cross is on the up, given that no other than Marcus Wareing, the feisty dictator of the two Michelin starred restaurant in the Berkeley, is attached. Private Dining at The Gilbert Scott

The Private Room at The Gilbert Scott is an intimate room seating up to 18 guests. It is adjoined to the bar, offering guests the option of enjoying the ambience from the bar and can be closed off exclusively for more private events and meetings. This space lends itself as a meeting room, a dining room for business gatherings or social celebrations. Expect a concise, yet varied range of menus as well as wine matching recommendations from the sommelier to accompany each dish.

The Kitchen Table's arc-shaped table seats up to 10, facing the kitchen for a birds-eye view of the action. Surrounded by walls of wine, this room gives the guests an ability to witness the buzz of the kitchen yet keeping the intimate atmosphere within the private space. Choose from a four or seven course tasting menu, brought to the table by the chefs.

Marcus Wareing

marcus wareing Southport fruit and veg merchant’s son Marcus Wareing has entered the ‘post-Gordon Ramsay’ phase of his career as a chef, restaurateur and judge on MasterChef: The Professionals. Wareing spent some 15 years working for Ramsay, at Aubergine, L’Oranger (his first head-chef gig), Pétrus and The Savoy Grill. Now his own man, he runs MARCUS at the Berkeley hotel (reopened in 2014), The Gilbert Scott (2011) and casual newcomer Tredwell’s (2014).
