Hidden away at the end of a long and winding lane on the outskirts of the pretty village of Eype, the Garden Café certainly takes some finding – but it’s well worth the trek. This is a fascinating and beautiful set-up built around a fully functioning, Soil Association-accredited organic farm with wondrous vistas and exhilarating walks all around. Home-cooked meats from animals reared on Downhouse’s pastures shows up strongly on the menu, as do fresh, herby salads and unfussy daily specials (check the blackboards). Kids love the choice of finger sandwiches (jam, Marmite and peanut butter), while the traditional cream teas are most generous. Food is served outside in the verdant garden with views stretching out across the farm and down to the sea – you can even camp here, if you can’t bear to drag yourself away.
