Square Meal Review of The French by Simon Rogan ?

Famous for its opulent belle époque decor, the grand French restaurant within Manchester’s legendary Midland Hotel is now home to this “chic city interpretation of Simon Rogan’s distinctive style”. The swanky high-ceilinged dining room’s blingy crystal chandeliers and luxe trappings have been softened by bare tables, grained wood floors and pastoral moss-toned panels (reflecting Rogan’s love of all things wild and natural), while the uncompromisingly seasonal food shows “complete and utter respect for even the humblest ingredients”. Head chef Adam Reid’s efforts revolve around a choice of thrilling multi-course tasting menus (plus a pared-down lunchtime deal) that will resonate with fans of Rogan’s world-class L’Enclume in Cumbria: smoked Maran egg yolk with yellow turnip, truffle and mushroom broth; breaded oyster, butternut squash, bacon, buttermilk and mint; Valley venison with roasted parsnips, cavolo nero and elderberry; baked quince with bay leaf, ginger biscuit and brown-butter ice cream – a procession of brilliant ideas bristling with incredible flavours, textures and contrasts. The whole place oozes class with its welcoming vibe, tuned-in service and sense of style – in short, “a truly amazing gastronomic experience”. Note: Rogan has also re-vamped the hotel’s old Colony restaurant as Mr Cooper’s House & Garden.

    Champagne and Chutney :: The French

    Birthdays are always special aren’t they? Mine was last week and I wanted to do something special to celebrate. Nobody (and I mean nobody) does ‘special’ better than The French in Manchester so I was over the moon when I found out I was going to the French for my birthday dinner.

    If you haven’t heard of The French, it’s the famous restaurant at the Midland Hotel which is as old as Manchester itself! The Midland Hotel is where Rolls met Royce to form the Rolls-Royce company way back in 1904 after all. The French has its own claim to fame too, it was one of Britain’s first Michelin-starred restaurants awarded...

    Nomface :: The French, Manchester

    After all the hype and glowing reviews coupled with a long ambition to visit L’enclume, The French provided the perfect opportunity to sample the food of acclaimed chef Simon Rogan. The control centre of Simon Rogan’s mini-empire is the Cumbrian village of Cartmel, where, in 2002, the Southampton-born chef opened his world-class restaurant L’Enclume. Rogan now has his own farm nearby, which produces obscure heritage ingredients for his highly innovative cooking. In 2013, Rogan branched out, launching The French and Mr Cooper’s House & Garden in Manchester’s Midland Hotel. A year later, he opened Fera at Claridge’s, and further projects are in the pipeline.
